I'm trying apple butter for the first time. . it's been in my crockpot since 11:00 last night (now it's 2:30 in the afternoon) and it smells great and tastes great, but is very runny still. Am I doing it wrong? Or does it take forever? Thanks for any help!

I make it in the crockpot too, and it does take approx 24 hrs...be sure to leave the lid ajar, or off completely. You can use a splatterguard on top if you want but I never had any trouble with it splattering.

Sheila,

When I make mine I leave the cover slightly ajar to let the steam out. I also stir occasionally. It does take awhile. What I do to see if it is the desired thickness is I take a spoonful out of the crockpot and let it sit for 15 minutes to half an hour to see if it has thickened. If it has I get ready to can. Doesn't it make your home smell wonderful?
