I have quite a few pickling cucumbers, and would like to make dill pickles (my first attempt). All the recipes I have found so far call for fresh dill. I have checked all my local stores and vegetable stands and can't find fresh dill anywhere. Is is OK to use dried dill? If so, how much would you use to equal one head of fresh dill?

Thanks again ladies for all your help - I'm learning so much from you!!

I have always substituted dried dill weed and seeds. No problem. Like the rest I use 1-2 tsp per jar. According to "The Joy of Pickling", "one tsp of dried dill seeds will substitute for one dillumbel".

Thanks ladies - I think I'll give it a try this weekend with dried dill. I've never looked for fresh dill in this area before, but haven't had any luck finding it. Maybe it doesn't grow well here for some reason!

I have used dried dill seed and it works fine. I use 2 teaspones per quart.

They had dried dill & dill seeds at our Save A Lot for 75 cents each so I stoicked up & am using those, as dill here is always bunny food. I cannot tell a difference

We have made about 30 quarts of pickles thus far and though we do not have trouble finding fresh dill at grocery stores, farmers markets and such...it does not always look fresh and wonderful. We have added some dill seeds and dried dill to the jars that did not get the fresh. We have done the dried dill in years passed and have not really noticed a difference. Good luck!

Maybe google it- see if you can find some info on using dried. I've only done it with fresh so I'm no help- sorry! :)

Luanne, I've used dry and think it works fine. I just dump a good pinch in each jar. That probably doesn't help you much. About a 1/2 to 1 teaspoon should be about what is on a head of dill. Good luck.
