 What to do with crab apples??

Turns out, two of the trees in our yard are crab apple trees. We are going to have a pretty good crop. I don't know what to do with them. I looked on allrecipes and there isn't anything there. I was thinking of some sort of jelly. I loff apple jelly.

Anyone have a good recipe for the jelly or anything, crab apple-wise??

I make a rosemary or sage flavored crabapple syrup, and add it to teas or sparkling water. YUM!

Sorry took a while, been combineing oats, and baling straw.

Making Crab Apple Syrup
Chop apples in half, ( skins, cores, and all) into a largeenameled or stainless-steel container, with: 1 cup water for every 3 cups apples (roughly)
Stew over moderate heat until apples disintegrate, 1-2 hours.
Stir the mixture: it should be liquid, like a cream soup; add water if necessary and cook a little longer to mix it in.
Line a number of containers with cheesecloth, dish towel,handiwipe, anything to strain it in. add 2 cups of apple glop
and hang to drip over bowl. Do not press or squeeze, but allow to drip 3-4 hours or over night.
This is "Apple Syrup" unsweetened. To sweeten add 1 cup white sugar or 3/4 cup honey for every 2 cups of syrup and simmer until mixed. You may can or freeze this. I add sugar to taste.

To use this for jelly add equal amounts of prepared fruit syrup, with the apple syrup. The recipe says do not do more then 4 cups of fruit syrup at a time, as it won't jell. I add sugar to taste.
For a slightly jelled jam add 1 part crabapple syrup to 3 parts fruit pulp.

I hope this works for all of you. It is the only "pectin"

I made pickle crabapples and they were great. You can also make a sauce.

I use this recipe to make juice, it tastes wonderful during the holidays, heated in your crock-pot or perculator with a few cinnamon sticks added to it. We also like it for breakfast.

CRAB-APPLE JUICE

1 ice cream pail of apples
5 qt. water
8 tsp. cream of tartar

Bring water to a boil. Add the cream of tartar, pour over apples. Cover; let stand 36 hours. Strain add 1 cup sugar to 10 cups juice. Heat to boiling Seal in hot sterilized jars. Process 10 minutes in boiling water bath.

Enjoy.

You can make a pickled crab apples as well. My son loves crab apple syrup. He uses it on pancakes and waffles.
I make the syrup and use it as pectin in all my jams and jellies. It jells nicely, takes a bit more cooking. And you can use sugar to taste. I can dig out the recipe if anyone is interested.

I'll have to try the canning and/or the spiced apples. They sound so good!

As for the wine, thanks but no-can-do. Can't do anything alcoholic, even crab apples! :-)

I know you were thinking jellies but have you ever thought of making crabapple wine? Its very nice especially on a summer eveing. We make it almost every year.

I also make Crabapple jelly. One year I tried Crabapples in my Apple Butter and it came out so good!

Now I am Crabapple obsessed! I have never seen them in TX, Cassie lived in Arkansas...

I may have to add Crabapple trees to my list to plant along with wild Plum.

OH my goodness. My Great-Grandmother, Cassie, (my grandfather's mother) used to make Crabapple jelly and it was wonderful! I will see if I can find a recipe for you. My aunt may know where the recipe is. In the mean time I found these:
