Maggie, aren't fresh roasted beans wonderful!!! We love giving fresh roasted coffee for gifts. Each year at Christmas our Mailman and UPS driver get some too! We have the best smelling mailbox in the neighborhood!

I roast too! I LOVE my coffee roaster. it's about $14o including beans and free shipping. I buy organic fair trade beans, which I can get from Burman Traders at about $4 a lb, while locally I was paying $10-12 a lb. for roasted beans. So my coffee roaster paid for itself in just a few months, I can buy coffee in bulk and save loads of packaging, AND the coffee is way way better because it's fresh. I cannot say enough nice things about my coffee roaster! it's not too loud and isn't smoky. so we just roast in the basement. And people LOVE getting fresh home-roasted coffee as a gift!

As far as roasting time, you will have to do your homework :) Each bean and origin is different for example a Columbian coffee may be better at a City roast (a level of roasting) while another type might be better at a Full City. It really is a science, but it's fun!
At Sweet Maria's website, they tell what roasts are best for the variety of bean.(when you check out the beans available, they give reviews of the flavors and characteristics)

I have a popcorn maker like you are talking about. That's the only way we make popcorn. I never knew you could roast coffee beans like that. I think I will give it a try. How long do you roast yours in the popcorn maker and how many beans do you put in at time? |

We just use a Hot-air Popcorn Popper (the kind that swirls)
Several years ago we bought a Hearthware Home Roaster and it died allot quicker than expected. I think unless you are willing to pay at least a couple of hundred dollars try the popcorn popper. You can purchase them at the Thrift Store for just a couple of dollars.
The price is cheaper per pound. We love roasting our own. It tastes wonderful and it is also fun seeing the different origins of coffee and their characteristics, what level of roast is best. We love coming up with our own blends :)

I have never roasted coffee beans before. Is there anything we need to know about coffee roasters if any of us decide to go that direction.?I saw on one of the sites there was quite a price difference. It sounds very interesting. |

This isn't in "bulk" unless you want 5 pounds of it, but http://desertsuncoffee.com/order-here is where we buy our coffee. The Cafe Feminino is the absolute best coffee I have ever had, but I don't think I've had any of theirs that I didn't like. It is sold in bulk in our local health food stores, and is roasted locally and fair trade. It is also grown by female coffee growers, and a portion of the proceeds goes to a local women's resource organization! We can help farmgirl sisters in other countries too!

I have purchased from green mountain coffe and my parents use them for their bed and breakfast. I have always been pleased. They have a wonderful variety and over seasonal varieties (pumpkin spice! Yum) and have a large selection of fair trade varieties.

I find that shipping costs usually negate any savings you find online for just about anything. Of course sometimes you can find special items or quality, so sometimes it's worth it. Personally, I think Costco can't be beat for whole coffee beans if you can find a store. In the freezer it stays fresh for a very long time.

Thats what I was afraid of. I don't want to spend a good sum of money on coffee that's not really any good and try to return something online.

I tried a couple of differant ones, and would not recomend either due to price and quality.
