Everytime I go in my garden and get near my squash or zuchini I break out in a horrible rash that stings for hours. It was 92 with a heat index of 103 at 8 am this morning so wearing long sleeves isnt really possible. Does this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions?

I used to get a rash from fuzzy stems as well so I cut the legs and feet off of a pair of pantyhose and started wearing the leg part like arm warmers. It keeps the plant "hairs" from sticking into my skin and it isn't as warm as long sleeves. Also it helps keep the mosquitoes off as well.

I get it too..from squash especially...the cold water washing thing helps alot.

I am like Patsy- I get them from anything with a fuzzy stem. I think the little spines of the plant get broken on my skin or something. Zuchs are really bad for me.

That's a great idea Teresa...Mama's are so smart sometimes! I think I might make a pair for fall when it's time to harvest all the squash. I wouldn't think it would take much more than 20 minutes to whip up a pair. Thanks!

I forgot about what my mama calls gardening sleeves, she makes them from light weight, light colored cotten fabrics. They are tubes with elastic at both ends, you slide them on , up to your pits, and down to your wrists, your arm is now covered and protected, and you can slip them off and on as needed.

I get it from any kind of fuzzy stems. I wash real good and then pour alcohol over my hands. Seems to do the trick.

Sure does Julie only I don't get a typical rash, just redness...and it itches like crazy!! Radish stems and even too much exposure when pruning the tomato plants will do the same to me. Strange, because I'm really not allergy prone. What does help me is a soapy wash up in cool water.

There is an irratint from squash plants that alot of people will get a rash from, do not scratch, and rinse off with "COLD" water immediatly, no rubbing, just the force of the water, with the heat, your pores are open, so the cold water will close them.

Beans do it to me. I pick with long sleeves and then wash with a bacteria type soap.
