I am going to jump into pressure canning. I went to a class last night, HB took it with me and we are going to jump into this side of canning. I would like to know which pressure canner and brand as well that you all recommend? I relaize if I get a guage top one, I will need to get it tested every year, where as the bobble top ones dont require that, however with the pressure gauge, I can make it hit 12 #, (due to my sea level/altitude issue) verses going to 15#, etc....

I don't own a pressure canner...yet. I've been researching which one I would like though. I've pretty much decided that it will be an All American. I would like to buy the 21 quart size, but it's too tall for my stove, because our microwave is mounted above the stove. So, I will probably buy the 15 quart.

Belle, I dont think thats weird at all. We say one of those screw down kinds in Canning class. They shouwed us how to actually screw them down, like order. The instructor said to not go in sequentlual order around fro the first to the last one. She said screw down 1, then jump across to example 4, then back to 2, then 5, then 3 then 6 like you would do lug nuts when changing a tire. Something tells me you probably were already aware....

I have been checking them out too and have been leaning toward the All American as well.

I've been using my Presto quart canner for lots of years. I got it just before my youngest son was born and he will be 35 this year. It has treated me well and I've taken good care of it. My mother never used a pressure canner and her green beans scared me!

Belle, I too have had a hand me down Mirro canner, my grandma first, my mom second and then me, but my d-in-law also uses it. Lots and lots of very fond memories, as a tear runs down my face. It cans up to quarts, and you can go to the mirro web site and order any parts you might need.

My pint canner is a Mirro. Had it for 30+ years. my big Quart canner, don't know that it has a name. It's in the celler and too lazy to go see if it has a name. My Grandpa canned with it in the 40's and 50's, Momma canned with it in the 60's and 70's. I have used it since 1980. It is the kind with screw clamps to hold down the lid. Grandpa made a little wrench to loosen the screw clamps when opening the hot canner. That little tool is very special to me. I can almost feel Grandpa's and Momma's vibes when I use it. I feel the same way when I use my Daddy's pitch fork. Is that weird? |

I am looking into an All-American, too. I wish it offered more than a 1-yr warranty.
My mom said to watch for actual canning capacity. All-American's website lays that out very clearly ("Holds X amount of pints, etc.) |

I have been using a Mirro bobble top pressure canner for over 20 years. They are reasonably priced and easy to find and to get replacement parts for.

I don't have one yet Kim, but when I do purchase one this year it will be an All American. I have read reviews and it sounds like a great investment
