Posted - Jun 01 2009 : 08:29:44 AM Michigan berries aren't ripe yet but we couldn't resist the CA berries at the market and went a little crazy. Smoothies, sliced on angle food cake and last night made the best strawberry ice cream ever. There is just enough left for breakfast lol Michele

Posted - Jun 09 2009 : 10:50:01 AM Oooh, Michelle...where do you go? I've been trying to find a u-pick strawberry patch 'round here but haven't had any luck. They all seem to be hiding....

Posted - Jun 09 2009 : 10:17:16 AM RubyJunes, I'd say that's very good, especially if they're organic. Here, a quart of store-bought NON-organic strawberries (often half rotted) cost anywhere from $4 to $6, depending on how long they've been on display. And they taste like vaguely strawberry-flavored cardboard. Ugh!
If I could, I'd take advantage of that deal and stock up on plenty of berries for immediate use as well as for jam or freezing. :-) |

Posted - Jun 09 2009 : 10:11:52 AM Just curious how much the u-pick berries are where you all are from? Here they're $1.50/quart...not sure if that's a good enough deal or not. Thanks!

Posted - Jun 09 2009 : 09:06:06 AM I've had a few from my everbearing plants so far. They're in their second year now and really starting to produce -- they're small but deliciously sweet. I've got so many baby runners I'm not sure if I can handle half of them -- what a nice dilemma. Question, though, does allowing too many baby runners to take root rob the main plant of its producing capability? |

Posted - Jun 02 2009 : 06:45:54 AM I succumbed to the berry fairy and got those CA berries too. I made your freezer jam with one box and then the next box mostly spoiled! :-( So, I cut them up and put a little sweetner on them for the fridge and yogurt. |

It rained all last week. Rain on berries = brown spots and moosh
Luckily the chest freezer is packed full and ready for jam makin' when it gets a bit cooler again.
You can never quite get enough though |

Posted - Jun 01 2009 : 5:43:32 PM Strawberries are the best.....have had some CA berries here and just the other day had a handful of my very own alpine strawberries to go along with breakfast! Yum!! Have the yellow wonder so you don't get that beautiful berry red, but sure do get the flavor. |

Posted - Jun 01 2009 : 12:49:30 PM We've been getting the CA berries here. The strawberries in my yard are a long way off still since I planted a little late. I've got my fingers crossed for a crop this year. Can't seem to keep the CA berries fresh for very long though.
