I've been reading about the Slow Food movement, and coincidentally, today I turned on the TV to the "create" network, and there is a special on "Slow Food".

The slow food movement is the opposite of fast food, it is about the food of a particular place, locally grown and harvested, and lovingly prepared, and enjoyed with family and friends.

The concept seems to fit well with Mary Jane's fans, anyone else a "fan" of slow food?

I have more questions about recipes from my grandkids than from my kids. #1 son cooks better than I do and always from scratch. #2 son is pretty much meat, potato and salad guy. My daughter who is a champion baker and made wedding cakes for a while don't cook hardly at all. She will call on her way from work and I'll ask what they are having for supper and she says I am having Toco Mayo and the rest of the family is having Long John Silver. We NEVER had fast food when I was growing up nor did DD. Don't know how she could have strayed so far from real food.

I always give the grandkids herbs or a mix of some sort for Christmas. Only 3 (out of 7) actually use it.
It might be several months but they usually call and ask how they were supposed to use their gifts. One grandson called from Kansas City one time and told me they were fixing Mexican for supper but found that they didn't have any toco seasoning. I sent them to their pantry and ask them if they had certain ingredients, they did and they said it was really good and was glad that they didn't have to go to the store in the middle of fixing supper.

Most kids don't know how to improvise.

It's funny but my daughter (27) now lives in New York City and still cooks from scratch. She is trying to bake bread and rolls in a postage stamp sized kitchen. She even makes jam. I guess the girl can leave the country but you can't get the country out of the girl!! She even made butter in her food processor for a dinner party a few weeks ago and everyone was soooo impressed. I crack up all the time. Her friends have never had much real food unless it came from a restaurant. I don't know how many dishes I have dictated over the phone to all the kids. It makes my heart glad to know they still like slow food.

Heck, I am so old (58), they didn't even have "fast" food when I was growing up. Lol. All we can afford here is slow food. But it is better for you and tastes better too.

I guess I have been doing Slow Food for years.
My pantry is always stocked and my grown kids joke that they will not starve in a disaster, they will just come live with me.
lol
My daughter (34) was house sitting for me last summer when she informed me that there was nothing to eat in my house. When I told her she was crazy she replied that there were only "ingredients" but no food.
So, even kids who are raised on whole and healthy foods can get caught up in the whole convenience thing. So sad

we have something here (Canada) that started in British Columbia (but I am sure many people have been doing it before this book came out) Called the 100 Mile diet. These people only eat things that have come from a 100 mile radius. There is a "challenge" to do it for 30 days. Depending on where you live....you might not have any flour....I want to try it, but I don't think I could live without COFFEEEEEE:)

I have to chuckle over the "slow food" thing. I have always cooked from scratch. My response to my kids when they were champing at the bit because they were sure they would starve to death was "real food takes time". I am not a fan of pre-packaged foods. To me they have this weird fake taste. I have always tried to raise most of what we ate and tried to buy local as much as possible when it was something I didn't. It's like this "new" locovore movement is just now validating what I've always believed.

I am a fan of Slow Food! We grew up eating Slow Food- lots of it and it was always good... okay so I didn't like ham soup but that wasn't because it wasn't good- it was just my tastebuds! Anyway, when I first lived with DH, he always bought things like Hamburger Helper and I thought I was going to die the first time we had it. So gross. I could taste the chemicals and it made me physically ill.

I have 2 nieces and a nephew over today. I made homemade spaghetti sauce in about 10 minutes and pasta. I think people think that just because it doesn't come out of a premixed can- it can't be fast- but it can! And if you make a big vat of it with garden tomatoes, you can Can your own spaghetti sauce! Then it is just as fast as the store bought stuff but SO much more tasty!

I am a HUGE fan of the Slow food movement. (I say this as I eat a big 'ol doughnut...mind you my neighbour made them....so does that count?) I am so very blessed to live on a farm where we raise our own beef, chicken and pork. We also have dairy and eggs. Since I live on an island with the ocean all around me I have access to wonderfull fresh seafood.
