You may remember that around New Year's I purchased some of the wonderful MJF organic beef that is now available http://www.ieatmeat.org/ and socked it away in the freezer for the hubby and I to eat in the coming months. This week was tri-tip week. Oh Boy - Wow! Wonderful. So glad I made the investment. Even in this economy it is a savings when all is said and done!!!! Here's what I did.
First using a gift of lemons from my neighbor's lemon tree I made a triple batch of the following... (you can double or triple it too!)
My Mother's Lemon B-B-Q Sauce (we think this originated from McCalls magazine in the early 60's we don't really know for sure...)

1/2 cup oil, such as sunflower
1 medium onion, peeled & thickly sliced into at least 3 slices
1 tablespoon coarse sea salt
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 cup Ketchup, I prefer Organic "Heinz" brand
1/2 cup your favorite homemade herbal vinegar, such as my favorite "lemon thyme", or plain cider vinegar is fine
1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 medium unwaxed lemon, thickly sliced into at least 3 slices

Saute' the onion slices in the oil until soft and starting to brown. Add the salt and peppers and saute' briefly before pouring in the ketchup. Cook the ketchup enough to "brown" it (it will change in color from the bright red to mahagony...) and when all bubbly add the rest of the ingredients. Simmer uncovered for at least 20 minutes until the lemons are very soft. Makes 3 - 3 1/2 cups. Store in the refrigerator and use within several months. Use in any recipe calling for Barbeque sauce. Tip! Don't discard those lemon slices after the sauce is cooked. Be sure to grill them too, along with your other foods, because they become unbelievably good, almost a candied treat when grilled. Try it - you'll see!

Then I used this sauce on my MJF organic tri tip beef roast using a Weber's Real Grilling recipe.
I rubbed the roast with equal parts lawry's seasoned pepper, freshly ground pepper, coarse sea salt, celery salt, & granulated garlic.
Doused it with Olive oil and rested it for a half an hour while heating my gas grill for the same amount of time.

I then grilled it over direct flames for 5 minutes on each side Slathered it with about 1/4 cup of sauce, turned off the inside burners (the direct flames under the meat) and then, over indirect heat, i grilled the tri-tip for another half hour turning it over once halfway through the cooking time. I then rested it inside the turned-off barbeque for 10 more minutes. Served it with warm sauce on the side & lots of oven roasted garlic rosemary fries.

Used the leftover meat the next day thinly sliced on french rolls with the bbq sauce, lettuce & red onion for wonderful sandwiches!

I was wondering how MJF beef would taste. We are thinking of buying 1/4 of a cow and this may be just the place to order. Thank you for letting us know as well as sharing your BBQ recipe.

Oh DiAnn, I hope you love the sauce as much as my family has over the years. Use it on everything! And I really hope you try the maryjanesfarm organic beef -it is fab.

I am going to give this lemon BBQ sauce a try. Reading about it and the tri tip beef. Well lets just say my mouth was watering. Sounds really good.
