That is what I am about to become if I can't figure out what to do with all these crabapples! Jelly you say? What version would you like?! I even string them to dry for garlands but I can only thread so many miles! The squirrels have been pelting us with acorns lately, perhaps I can use my surplus as retaliatory weapons?!!JUST KIDDING...
HONEST! BRAMBLE

I planted a crabapple tree 11 years ago and it has basically stayed the same size...It has pretty pink flowers in the spring then produces tiny little crabapples late summer. My daughter Alex has used them as minature "apples" in her doll house kitchen.

I planted two little crabapple trees this year. I only got enough to string for garlands this year, but they will get huge eventually and I am sure glad to know what to do with them too!! (before I get crabby!!)

Eileen, Isn't that how the tradition of the "honey-moon"got started in ancient times? The bridal couple would drink honey mead for a month to ensure fertility? Did this originate with the Celts? Some of my kin are from the Channel Islands and Cornwall. My husband's ancestory is from county Kerry in Ireland. I'd love to raise bees but my husband refuses because he had to raise them for 4-H as a boy and was allergic to their stings. They never bother me.

OK so now you have my interest peaked! How do you make Mead with steel cut rolled oats. You'll just have to go to the recipies we'd love to share section and share it, OK?
We raise Honey Bees and intend to learn this art of making Mead. I love it! Was introduced to mulled Mead while attending school in Bangor Wales in 1969, took me years to find a good source for it here.
Scotland, Ireland, and Wales is the birthplace of my relatives and Mead is the drink of the kings I am related to. So I love it honestly.
Please share your recipe.

Thanks Clare! I guess I won't be crabby anymore! Both sites were interesting. This recipe reminds me of something we did with peaches or plums once and it was very potent! Has anyone ever made mead with steel cut rolled oats? That was quite interesting too! Bye for now?

Hi Bramble...
Here are some links with ideas for crabapples:
http://www.spruce.ca/Food/crabapple_recipes.htm
http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1-1,crabapple,FE.html
or
to keep the edge off:
Crabapple Liqueur

1 (4-quart) mason jar with tight-fitting lid
4 quarts crabapples, washed, cored and quartered
4 cups sugar
3 cups vodka

1. Fill mason jar with prepared crabapples.
2. Add the 4 cups of sugar and three cups of vodka.
3. Store the jar on its side, turning once every day for 16 days to help the sugar to dissolve.
4. After 16 days, filter out the fruit bits and bottle.
Makes 1 quart.
Note: Instead of crabapples, you can also use chokecherries with scotch, or raspberries with rum.

I've not tried any of these, but that liqueur sounds like a good choice to serve with our farmgirls tea on Oct 17th! haha
