Anyone see the segment on Alice Waters tonight on TV - it was one of the documentary shows like Dateline or 20/20. Very inspirational for those of us trying to improve our diet. I love the gardens in the schools ideas and how they took it a step further to use the food grown to teach the kids how to cook it healthfully.

Sadly I only saw the end of the segment.... I attended a conference in the Seattle area a couple years ago where a representative from her group spoke .... The conference was sponsored by Access to healthy foods coalitian. The attendees were very diverse...School dietians trying to improve the menu for kids to corporate trying to improve meeting snacks from donuts to fruit and improve vending machine offerings .... Farmers Markets and Food banks too. I wish every school could have a garden. It was so inspiring to hear their success story

Farmers Markets are good for everyone.

I saw that too. She is a very interesting lady. I love what she's doing. She said something about wanting to do a garden at the White House. I thought we had gotten someone to do that already. It's a great idea and makes me wonder how the govenment could pass a bill to make gardening ilegal. Don't make sense to me.

Sherri,
I love this concept! When I win Powerball and I can open my own school I'm going to use the Edible Schoolyard concept in my curriculum. Check out these websites:

Also, there is a movement to get children closer to nature because with computers, video games, TV, "Stranger Danger," etc., it is believed that today's children have a Nature Deficit. It's called "No Child Left Inside."
