Have you seen these U-Tube videos? I'm hooked! I love Clara. I'd love to cook with her and listen to her stories. I'm secretly having a taste for peas & pasta.

I love Clara! I have been watching her videos for a while and I'm going to order her DVD. I also bought "Grandma's Wartime Kitchen" cookbook with recipes from WWII when items were scarce. I really love learning about the Depression through WWII era of American life.

I cut potatoes and onions the same way. Learned from Granny.

I just started reading this thread although I've looked at the title many times. When I looked at Clara's picture I realized I used to read her blog a year or so back. She is a hoot!! Hope I'm that lively at 92. I'm going to watch her videos on YouTube.

Good ear Sandra! I just read her blog
http://depressioncooking.blogspot.com/
and it says she grew up near Chicago in Melrose Place.
I also see her great grandson has decided to discontinue her youtube series and put out a DVD and, a cookbook in the future. I'll be purchasing the cookbook for sure!

This little lady is precious. Both of my parents grew up during the depression and I can still remember the stories they use to tell me about how hard things were. I'll be watching her for sure. Some might think these lessons are old fashioned, but o the truths we can learn from them.

God bless

Clara was on Good Morning America yesterday and she's supposed to be on CBS evening news this coming week. It's her great grandson who has been doing the videos. She lives in upstate NY if I remember correctly.

I just watched Clara's Depression Cooking video --the Poorman's Feast. You have to love this dear woman, and she helps viewers to understand just a little bit of how very difficult things were during the Great Depression. I was born just after the Depression, but had a great understanding of why my parents saved everything and only bought what they could afford and could pay for with cash. My mother had an old cookbook from the government titled "How to Eat Well Though Rationed." Can you imagine how young people today would survive if they had to be frugal and couldn't buy just any amount of food they wanted when they went to the grocery store? It was a tough time, but I believe it showed the strength of our parents & grandparents and the experience left an indelible imprint on their lives.

Thank you for telling us about this! What a treasure! I am making everyone of those dishes! I'm sure she's from Chicago...she has an accent and sounds like my Italian relatives from there and she mentioned going to Lake Geneva and we used to do that...they actually had a big "chicago CLub on Lake Geneva in the old days (Lake Geneva, WI).
Trust me...if I had to chop things in my hand...I would be handless! Hats off to Clara and whoever took the time to film her....we need to honor our elderly in this country....there's a lot to learn from them...plus I'm right around the corner from being elderly myself!
Yes....MJ should do an article on Clara and more like her!
Thanks again for sharing this with all of us.

I made the Pasta & Peas dish tonight. My super Italian husband said it was like something his grandma used to make. He loved it. It seriously didn't even take me a half an hour from beginning to end to make. Thanks!!!

Thanks for sharing. Clara is very charming. I'll have to try some of her meals. I bet the kids would really like them.

I know when times were hard growing up, my mom made us beans (navy, pinto, etc) with ham and rice. If we were lucky, we got cornbread fritters or salmon patties to go with it. We ate a lot of beans and rice...

I wish more people were still that humble and real and aware of blessings......cookies only on Sunday. She is a love!!! Thank you for sharing that video with us. It made my day.

By the way, my mom never had a chopping board. She hand held all her potatoes, carrots, fruit, and everything and chopped it that way, too!

And I hope that someday, when all the lovely Claras are gone to their reward, we that follow behind them can be good matriarchs, and folks will watch us stand up for the simple and good things of life.

I made the Poorman's meal from one of her videos last night and it was a big hit, the only thing I changed was using spicy smoked sausage instead of hotdogs, the fella loved it! I'll definitely make it again :)

I'm so giddy! Clara added me as a "friend" on Facebook. (giggle) I wonder if she answers "fan mail".

I agree, she would be a wonderful addition to MaryJanes magazine.

Clara really reminded me of my Grandma Lydia. She was my Dad's mom. She sure is missed. I have wonderful memories of times with her. Thanks for posting this Deb. It really made my day!
