I just received a box of bisquick from my grandmother after she cleaned out her pantry. I know it's not going to be near as good as MJF's budget mix, but can I use it in it's place for her budget mix recipes?

Thanks!

Baking soda doesn't. Baking powder does. I have a recipe from Saveur magazine on how to make your own baking powder with cornstarch, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Unfortunately, I just was informed that my husband took my cooking magazines and buried them in a box in the back of the closet, so until he digs it out, I can't post the recipe. I'll share it as soon as I have access.

Alee, I also watch the aluminum. I go so far as to avoid aluminum foil as well. I had no idea tyhat baking soda had aluminum it it.

My husband never, ever asked for seconds of pancakes, until I used budget mix!

Trish- Oh I know just what you mean! I can even taste the chemicals in just regular baking flour too! Have you tried making the pancakes with MaryJanes Budget mix? Oh my gosh they are so good! The first time I made them I had to eat the whole batch myself because they tasted soo good! They tasted like the from scratch pancakes my grandma would make for me when I was a kid!

If anyone hasn't tried the budget mix- I highly suggest it! The flour tastes great and the baking powder doesn't have any aluminum in it like most commercial baking powders. We have Alzheimer's in my family so I have really started watching where I am coming into contact with aluminum lately.

Bisquick tastes really gross to me. Ever since I was pregnant, I can really taste the chemicals in things. I also really LOVE the fact that wheat budget mix acts just like white. I would suggest if you wanted to make your own, to use a scratch pancake recipe, then adjust it for whatever you are making, by comparing the mix to the recipe you are wanting to make, like a little sugar and butter cut in for scones, etc. Sorry for the run-on, hope this makes sense. I'm not done with coffee.

I am going to try Judiths! Thanks Judith :)

Thanks Alee! I bought the white and the whole wheat budget mix to try both a while back. I just ran out of the white so I'll be trying the whole wheat next. I haven't made cut biscuits in years before the other night. (I'd alway made drop biscuits.) I was pleasantly surprised how quick and easy it was with the budget mix and how super yummy it was. I'll try making up some of those biscuit sandwiches for the freezer. I doubt my family will let them stay in there very long. :)

AlyssaMarie- The budget Mix biscuits freeze great!

One thing I really love about the MJF Budget Mix is that the Whole Wheat bakes and acts just like the white due to their special milling process. I've never had whole wheat flour that has been as easy to use before. It sure does make it easy when you are hesitating over what to feed for dinner when you know you can make a bake over or maybe some fresh biscuits!

Not exactly, Lizabeth. In her book she has a recipe for how to make a bakeover crust from scratch. She also, in the magazine that featured the budget mix, had a recipe for a bakeover crust using budget mix. I worked backwards, using the proportions for the bakeover crust, and created my own budget mix so that I could make the recipes in the budget mix magazine without buying budget mix. So like I said, feel free to make up your own budget mix, but I'd suggest not posting it here.

In MJ's big book she has the recipe for how to put together your own budget mix... I'll see if I can find it it and post the page number :)

I used Bisquick before using MJ's Budget Mix. I haven't intermixed recipes but I have noticed that Bisquick seems to always be more lumpy. Does anyone have any experience with freezing items like biscuits from the Budget Mix? My family loves the biscuits cut in half with sausage patties and I was thinking about making up a bunch and stashing them in the freezer for those crazy mornings when I need a heat and serve meal. Any thoughts on freezing Budget Mix items?

I figured out how to make homemade budget mix, but I haven't posted the proportions here because I think it would be frowned on by the site hosts, as Mary Jane makes most of her money by selling her mixes.

So I noticed that the Budget Mix does not have shortening in it, anyone know the recipe for a "homemade" budget mix? It's only ingredients are flour, baking soda, baking powder.

We don't use Bisquick but I have made my own mix for biscuits, pancakes, and muffins. Can also be used for waffles if you add a lttle sweetning and eggs.

9 C flour
4 T baking powder
3 tsp salt
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 C instant powdered milk
2 1/4 C shortning

Use a big container. Mix everything except the milk with your fingers until all the shortning is blended in and it looks like cornmeal. Mix in the dry milk. Store in a tightly covered container like Tupperware or Rubbermaid.

I'm sure it is not as good and I do like MJ's budget mix, but I don't want to see food go to waste. I've never actually used bisquick so I was really at a lost.

Thanks for the review on the foldovers! I was worried that I would have to adjust the recipes and I don't have the time to experiment at the time.

Emily~
HMMMM~ while I am certain you can,I think that bisquick and like products certainly wouldnt be as healthy or as fresh as what you would get from the budget mix. :)
