There is nothing like a freshly baked batch of scones and a hot cup of tea on a cold Sunday afternoon!

MELODY’S SCONES

• 1 cup sour cream
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 cup white sugar (not so much if you will serve with jam)
• 2 teaspoons baking powder
• Ό teaspoon cream of tartar
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup butter
• 1 extra large egg ( I use 2- medium eggs)
• 1 cup raisins, dried cranberries, nuts, etc. (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. In a small bowl, blend the sour cream and baking soda, and set aside.
2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
3. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar and salt. Cut in the butter. Stir the sour cream mixture and egg into the flour mixture until just moistened. Mix in the raisins, dried cranberries, and or nuts, etc.
4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly. Roll or pat dough into a Ύ-inch thick round. I just use a small glass dipped in flour and cut them out like biscuits and place 2-inches apart on the prepared sheet. Brush with egg white/water/or milk (I use one whole egg and a little milk) then sprinkle with sugar.
5. Bake 12-15-minutes in preheated oven, until golden brown on the bottom.

Freezes well!

We love scones here too! Thanks for the recipe Melody. I love to add to my recipe collection. I just wish the scones didn't love my tummy & thighs so much!

Melody I Love Scones too!!! They are so quick and easy to make. Biscuits really just more tasty! Do you use clotted cream? I have a mock clotted cream recipe for tea parties. Otherwise it is just a hot cuppa and a hot scone! I'm having a valentine tea party and I'll use your scone recipe. Can't wait!

Melody - when I looked at your blog, I was blown away! I saw the familiar places of my home town of Springfield, ILL. How cool! I grew up so close to Lincoln's Tomb, Lincoln's home, the capitol, and the Edwards house that all were short bike ride for me. Even the new library is only blocks from my old home. I hope you enjoyed seeing it all!

I adore scones!! This looks like a really good recipe. I will have to try it for sure. When I moved here I was shocked to learn that the "scones" served here are fried dough!! served with honey butter it is still very good..but not what I would call a scone. Is that a Utah thing or do other areas do that too??

Melody, this looks very close to the British way of making scones. I can't wait to try your recipe! Thanks for sharing!
