Someone gave me a lamb shoulder roast. I have never had lamb, much less cooked one. Anybody have a recipe they love?

Jami, the bbq one sounds really good.

Now, I'll have to pass all this info on the friend who gave it to me. She has several of these in her freezer that someone had given her and she didn't know what to do with it either! So, you all helped us both out.

Since it is just my husband & I here for most meals, I buy lamb roasts often. I have them cut into 3rds. I get 3 meals plus leftovers from them. I usually cook in the crock pot. I vary seasonings & the veggies added. But almost always have garlic &/or onions. Our favorite seasoning mix for lamb is lemon zest, fresh ground blk pepper, Kosher salt, thyme, mint & parsley. I add new potatoes and carrots. Then I serve with petite peas.
If much is left over, I may cube it & add more veggies and water to make it stew. Another way is to season with garham marsala & add cubed eggplant, peppers, & tomatoes. It is a rich tasting meat.

It is a rule of nature that taking a day off on the farm sets a person back at least a week.

Another tip for the lamb roast that I didn't think of earlier.. Before you put on the seasonings, try coating the lamb with just a little bit of olive oil. It helps the seasoning rub stick to the meat.

We eat lamb once a week or so and love it. Once you have your roast dinner, with the leftovers you can make all kinds of goodies...I love a lamb sandwich for starters, but stir-fry is great too--rice with some soy sauce or a stir-fry sauce and veggies and slivers of the leftover roast....mmmmm. We've also done BBQ sandwiches with the leftovers, saute up slices of the roast leftovers, add BBQ sauce and serve open-faced on bread or on a hamburger bun...another mmm. We've also made burritos with leftover roast - either dice up fairly fine and cook with some salsa or a tomato type sauce, add veggies and cheese and spices and toss in a tortilla and bake or serve like tacos.

Have fun. It's not going to taste exactly like beef of course because it's lamb, but you can treat it and cook it the same as beef. I like mine medium rare.

Wow, thanks gals. I had no idea what lamb even tasted similar to. I think I'll try yours, Tina. The mix of herbs and spices sound yummy. I think I'll try it for Sunday dinner.

Good thing you told me about removing the silvery membrane/outer layer of fat. I would not have known that.

I love lamb roast. Try this. Trim the outer layer of fat away. Rub the entire surface of the roast with black pepper, a bit of salt, ground mustard, dry basil, dry thyme, garlic powder, and just a little bit of crushed red pepper. Then roast it at 350 degrees F until the center reads about 160 degrees on a meat thermometer. I did this last week and my entire family loved it! Even the ones who always said that they hate lamb went back for more.

Lamb also makes the most delicious curry, though a nice rare roast with garlic and rosemary is absolutely delicious too..

Use lots of pepper and rosemary...yummy! They have less fat than a beef roast, so don't overcook.

MMMM I love lamb roasts! I cook them just like beef roasts. They taste a bit like pork but are very rich.

Maybe you could cook it like a pot roast in the crock pot. I've done lamb roasts that way and they are delicious! I bet you could look up recipes online. Yum, yum.

I am not a big lamb fan.....but the one way I like it is studded with garlic (make wholes with knife, and insert garlic cloves), sprinkle with salt and pepper and then BBQ'd Considering the weather, you could roast it in the oven, with the same treatment.....do make sure to get the silvery membrane off of the meat......it doesn't taste very good.
