My grandmother used to make this for Christmas dessert every year.
All I know is that she cooked the creamy dressing that she put on the pineapples, mandarin oranges, marshmallows and coconut (were there nuts??)..she didn't use maraschino cherries (remarkably!! after all, it was the 60's!)
Another friend uses sweetened sour cream.
Does anyone have a good recipe to share?
I am feeling nostalgic and I know my kids would love it.

I ususally make mine really basic with diced apple, stawberries,sliced bananas, grapes and added mandarins during the holidays. I toss with fresh lemon juice and then add fresh whipping cream to which I have added a 1tsp. vanilla and 2tbsp honey. You could also add coconut, I'm just not a big fan of it.I

This may be at bit late, but maybe good for you gals to try.

1 tub coolwhip
1 packet pastichio pudding mix
1-2 cups tiny marshmallows
1 can crushed pineapple
1/2 cup grated coconut

If I will be serving more than 4 people, I also add 1-2 cans of tropical fruit mix Dole makes it in short squat cans, and Wal-Mart has their own house brand that is just as tasty

Mix all these in a bowl. Keep the pudding mix dry (don't add milk), just the juice from the fruit will do

Here's my no cook version. My family loves this recipe. It's a "must have" during the holidays.

Easy Ambrosia

2 lg. cans of fruit coctail, well drained.
1 can. pineapple rings (for top garnish)
8-12 maraschino cherries (for garnish)
1 can crushed or chunked pineapple, well drained
1 cup of coconut
1 pkg. mini marshmallows
2 sm cans mandarin oranges
1 container of Cool Whip

Mix all together in a large bowl. Top with pineapple rings and place a cherry in each ring. Also place some cherries in between so your family won't fight over them. ;)

Enjoy!

Yes, I believe this may be the one! I can't wait to try it.
I wanted to say earlier that in my memory it seemed to be a light, sweetened custard type thing that when mixed with the fruit and refridgerated had almost a whipped cream texture to it.
I can actually remember the yummy,squishy sound it made when it was spooned outa the bowl.
ooh boy, ooh boy!!!

PS Just an aside..DH's mom makes her own version of it by using lots of cool whip, maraschino cherry juice and bananas.
The family calls it "pink stuff"....
um, sorry Mom, but every thing about it turns me off.
The color,the brown bananas, the texture and...the name.
Just wanted me grammy's handmade,tropical ambrosiatickling my tongue and my Christmas memories.

This was a fun exercise. I looked up ambrosia in all my cookbooks!! They almost all said that basically ambrosia is any mix of fruit over which you sprinkle powdered sugar and lemon(or lime) juice, refridgerate and just before serving sprinkle with coconut, toasted or not and salted nuts and marachino cherries optional. Each had a different combinations of fruits but I think that this is the recipe you are looking for with the cooked fruit sauce poured over and allowed to set in the fridge to blend the flavors.
Fruit salad dressing
1/4 cup pineapple juice
2 Tablespoons flour
Mix in the top of a double boiler.
Add and mix until smooth:
2 egg yolks
1/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
Warm 1 1/4 cups pineapple juice until luke warm.
Beat the two egg whites until medium, not stiff. Gently stir beaten egg whites into the mixture in the double boiler. Slowly stir in the luke warm pineapple juice and cook this mixture over hot not boiling water until thickened. Cool until cold and then stir in 1 1/2 cups whipped extra heavy whipping cream.
Pour over fruit mixture and refridgerate until serving time. At serving time you may sprinkle with toasted or un-toasted coconut and salted peanuts or almonds. I like to use almonds that I have soaked ala Mary Janes recipe and then roasted till slightly toasted.
Several of the ambrosia recipies I have call for banana slices, pineapple, oranges, marshmallows and some call for melon balls too.
One has pears,mandarins and honeydew melon. MMMMM My mouth is watering.

Susan, You brought back so many memories for me...We had ambrosia every Christmas. My Mother and grandmother made it...

Ours was different...We peeled fresh oranges, maraschino cherries, and coconut---I think that is all, but it was so good.

We also had the recipe that you shared. We did use nuts, cherries and we just used sour cream as the dressing....We mixed the sour cream in with the fruit. It was delicious....My celebration is Sunday 18 th....I think I will add this to my menu.

Hey Farm Girls!!!

Ambrosia is one of my favorite desserts. It was almost a staple when I was growing up in Illinois, but I have never made it. Maraschino cherries--have not thought of those in years. I used to fight with my brother over who was getting the most cherries. Looking back, there must have been enough dye and chemicals in those little goodies to give us all some sort of cancer risk.

That looks like a might tasty drink there but not exactly the dessert I remember. Thanks for checking, though.
The frozen dessert looks abit closer (and GOOOOD!)but there were definitely chunks of fruit in it and mini marshmallows, too.
Perhaps I'll do an internet search an see what comes up.

Can't find any recipe for a cooked sauce Susan, but Joy of Cooking offers this one...

Mix 3/4 cup pureed sweetened apricots with 3/4 cup pureed peaches. Add 1/4 cup orange juice, 1 tsp grated lemon rind and 2 tbsp rum or sloe gin.

Hi Susan...not sure if this is what you want or not. It comes from my well-worn Farm Journal Country Cookbook.

Frozen Ambrosia

4 c orange juice
1/2 c lemon juice
3 c sifted confectioners sugar
2 c heavy cream
2 tbsp sugar
2 tsp vanilla
Slivered salted almonds or peanuts.

Mix together orange juice, lemon juice and confectioners sugar.
Whip cream; blend in sugar and vanilla.
Pour fruit juice into 2 refrigerator trays. Spoon whipped cream over top, but do not mix together (juice and cream will be separate layers). Freeze until firm.
Spoon into sherbet dishes or a compote; top with nuts.
Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Sounds kinda tasty...might have to try this one!
