Somewhere we were talking about trying to grow ginger. Has anyone tried this? Is it supposed to sprout a leaf structure. mine isn't doing anything and I keep it well watered. Help!!

Miss Wilma, you ought to be able to buy it in the produce section of your grocery store. Those grow just fine, if you get one that is smooth and not shriveled like Ronna mentions.

If you look for a piece that is not shriveled at all and already has a couple of buds swelling, it helps. I've not grown any for a couple years, will have to check the piece in the fridge and maybe start it. Love the fragrance from the plant when it's growing..but then I love the smell of ginger. |

I love growing ginger, especially in winter. I just set the tuber on the surface of some potting soil, snuggled up a bit of dirt to the side, and then it started swelling at a joint followed by what looks like bamboo. Very pretty. I used the cannister cover left over from buying CD's for the computer...you know the clear plastic tub part...put the foam that keeps them snug in the bottom, then the clear ring on top of that, followed by the soil. Made it easy to keep moist (like a reservoir underneath) and monitor root development.
I started with a knot of ginger that came from the end piece. About thumb length. Hope this leads to success for you! Mine developed extra knots, ready for harvest, but when I moved it outdoors this summer, it was unhappy with me. I need to start a new one.

Hey Laurie, I am looking at mine now. I started 2 and they are about 1 1/2" long so far! I think I planted them a few months ago. They do have a little bit of a leaf starting to poke thru! I did hear it takes a LONG time for them to get going.
I have mine in a little pot right now in a container with water in the bottom. I just water about once a week.

Laurie, an herb grower told me one time that it takes Months and months for it to take root and sprout. I keep buying the ginger root but use it before I can get it planted. So I don't have any personal experience. I suggest just keep on taking care of it. You might move the dirt around a bit to see if the root is spoiling. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. |
