I tried for the umteenth time to sprout an avacado seed. And YES~! it did sprout and I planted it in soil and it is now nearly 16inches tall! I wonder now, will it grow into a tree? Will it produce avacados?

We had one we had tossed in the compost sprout about 15 years ago. It's a nice sized tree now. It freezes back in a hard frost but so far has always come back again in the spring. No avocados yet, although a friend in a neighboring town gets loads off of her tree.

Cheryl my hubby repotted mine this year for me. It has been doing great. This is the first avocado that has ever grown for me so I am keeping my fingers crossed. It is only about 2 feet tall though and just about a year old. So I am hoping with a larger pot it will get a little larger as it winters over in the house.

I have grown these thigs for year. They get about 2 ft tall and there done and die. No my uncle, when he was young did the same thing. He planted his in a 3 walled patio area in their yard. It grew but never had an avocado to eat. I used to play in it once I got old enough to climb.

I am not sure, you may be right. I will be talking to my SIL she raises them in California. Maybe I will just have her send me a tree thats ready to produce. Keep this one in the house as a houseplant?

When I started my tree that grew so big, it was 30 years ago. Do you suppose the avocados grown today are gene altered and the seeds won't grow? Or at least hard to germinate?

Cheryl, the same room that can grow a lemon should grow an avocado, too.

I grew an avacadi tree years ago. It got too big for my house and gave it to a friend who gave it to another friend with even taller ceilings. I don't know what ever happened to it but it got 18' tall.

Thank you Lisa. I will do that...I have a very sunny room to that used to home a Meyers Lemon so I should be able keep it in that room until later don't you think?

Well, Cheryl, you are on your way! Avocados need a pollinator. So, sprout the next seed you get, too. Also, I found they don't like cold drafts (that's why mine are dead!) and they don't particularly like to be transplanted either. So, later when it needs a bigger pot, be very careful in the handling and try to make it quick but gentle. It will take several years before it is mature enough to produce (I think it's 5-7 years) but you will have a beautiful tree in the meantime!

I did the same thing to get it started. I have many times stopped short of tossing a seed out & double think about it.. But this time I tried. I will need to research or check with my sister in law she has an avacado farm in California. Sure would be nice to grow a tree that produces. I posted a picture of it on my blogsite.

I am rooting one now. I put three toothpicks in the side and suspended it on the edge of a small glass where half of it is in the water. I'm just not sure if I have the rigth end in the water!?!LOL! Will keep you informed! As for growing avocadoes from it...not sure...does it need a mate? Does it flower and have to be pollenated? You are definitely on the way! Maybe you could put it outside next summer and see if it does. Good luck!
