I think I might hurt my husband before he takes his sourdough start to cow camp! ;0) I have never seen someone scatter flour and sourdough as a man does!! Geeze!! Anyways, does anybody have any good recipes for using sourdough? I think the kids have about had it with soudough pancakes and biscuits. Would love to hear about your favorite recipes!!

Thanks, Ronna. I appreciate your offer but I wonder if we just don't have the same yeast beasties in the air here that you have there. I saw a show on the History Channel some time back about sourdough and how the flavor varies in different parts of the country and wondered if that was why mine changed. They said the sourdough in San Fransisco was the tangiest in the country.

Be creative...in sweet goods, a half cup or so will add another dimension to the flavor. Most will not know what you've done, but will comment on how good it tastes. Unless it husbands or kids, they often eat without tasting :)

I found some sour dough recipes on the King Arthur website. I've made the bread, but look forward to making the popovers, cake, waffles, etc.

If you've not found the old posts, I'll give a few ideas. Sorry your starter didn't stay sour Lisa. Can try again when you're ready. I stir the hooch back in,(ugly liquid on top for those who don't know). That might make a difference. Also, if you were using it a lot, maybe it didn't have time to build up flavor again. If you try again, keep some aside that has "aged" to add to your pot after you've fed it.
Add a half cup or so to most baking recipes for that extra tang. Quick breads, coffee cakes, cornbread, waffles and pancakes. I really like the Sourdough Cookery by Rita Davenport, a large soft cover book by HP books is one of my favorites. I've had it since early 80's, so probably out of print. I've seen it on amazon and the other used book sites. The page with her Carrot cake recipe is splattered from repeated use-I think it opens to that page by itself.
There are a couple of good sourdough groups on Yahoo that I belong to also. I'm still willing to share my starter with those who want some, but will ask for postage. Never used to do that, but so many would ask for it and not even bother to let me know it had arrived-and some were never heard from before or after the posting. This forum as well as others.

We used to live in SLC and traveled all over the state for the 5 years we were there. Utah has the most fascinating terrain and geographic diversity and so many places to go rock hounding and just absolutely amazing scenery/rock formations. We went to Fremont once and the petroglyphs or pictographs (?) were just awesome. There were so many and the colors in them were so amazing. I was just thrilled to see something like that last for centuries and tried to imagine what those folks were trying to say. The sad part is that there were bullet holes in many of them. They didn't destroy them but, it really ticked me off that some folks have no respect for history, art and ancient peoples.

If we ever get down that way again, I'll let you know. We want to get back to the Grand Canyon again someday and you would be on the way there (pretty much). DH aunt lives in AZ and we are hoping to get down there next spring for a visit. So, maybe then! A trail ride in your area would just be way cool!

Yes!! They are all over the place, there was also the recent discovery of some dinosaur bones. Our area is very diverse, you can look out one side of your car window and see beautiful mountains with pines and aspens, then look out the other side and see red slick rock and desert. If you are ever down this way let me know. How about a Farmgirl trail ride? =0) Yee-Haw!!!

I got a great start from Ronna some time back and I used for bread. But, after a while the taste changed and it didn't have much of a "sour" flavor anymore, so I let it go. I'll bet Ronna has some great recipes.

Hey, Kristin, aren't you by those great petroglyphs (sp?) down there? Sorry to change the subject, it just came to mind when I saw your town.
