I don't know if this is the right place for this but I wanted to share something with all the canning girls here.

On one of the previous posts(don't know which one and don't know the topic it was under) someone asked where they could store all their canning jars. I saw a picture in a lovely Amish book (the Amish intrigue me with their simple lives) of a rack made for canning jars. It had many rows of wooden boards with slanted pegs extending from them. They inverted the jars on these pegs. The title of the book was The Amish Cook. It had some of the best pictures. I enjoyed it and thought I would share this with you.

Sorry about all the scatter brain run ons. I think I can remember everything but when I try I can't remember anything.

That would be a great idea if we had the space in our house.

I go through so many jars though, we barely have room for storage now. I usually save toamto boxes from our commissary and store the enpty jars in these, then the jellies when it's done. Lods and rings go into 2 different rubbermaid containers w/ lids. 1 for the regular mouth jars, one for the larger.

And if the lid has been sealed and broken, I don't try to re-use it. It's not worth the risk to a friend or customer shoud it loose its seal and cause someone to get sick. I will reuse them if its just to keep a jar from spilling for our own use though and doesn't need the air tight seal.

Lisa,
You're right. It is just like the spool holder. I didn't even think of it until you said it.

Do you reuse your flat lids? I don't but have always thought why not.

My canning jars are stored in the same cupboard as the canned goods. After removing the ingredients and washing the jars, I invert the flat lid and screw the ring on top and that keeps it clean for next year. No dirt and spider webs to wash out, but of course I do wash the jars before using--makes it easier.

Sounds like what I have for my spools of thread. But bigger.
