with the upcoming cold seasons approaching fast, i get excited for my fave foods that keep me warm and happy through the cold months. what are some of your faves? what do you look foward to? what are some of your family faves that have been passed down through the years?

i'm definately a soup and stew kinda gal. it's what i look foward to most as far as cooking goes in the cold seasons. and because they are some of the easiest meals to whip together... if i could, i think i'd cook everything in my trusy crock pot! chicken noodle, beef and veggie noodle, chili, hungarian stew, the list goes on and on. my hubby makes a split pea soup to die for! after cooking a ham, we use the leftovers for the split pea soup... his signature is making it THICK! almost like eating mashed potatoes...

of course i look foward to thanksgiving. it's my fave holiday of the year! and anything that has to do with pumpkin, apples, spices, and cranberry ingredients...

i got Hungarian Stew in the crock pot right now! one of my new faves... i just discovered it not long ago, but i love it! ooh, and i tried a new pumpkin pie recipe over the weekend.... i think it was my best one ever, give and take a couple things i'll work on later. yes, i get ansy for pumpkin recipes but i need to use up my pumpkin in the freezer to make room for the new stuff! both these foods produce hardy smells that just warm the soul!

Soups, stews, chili, meatloaf with mashies and gravy, chops, roasts; you know all the heavy stuff that just seems like too much in the summer.

Our favorite soups are minestrone, chicken noodle and potato/white bean.

Last week, I made roasted potatoes from the garden we grew this year. DS Evan (age 9) says they were the best potatoes in the Universe. They were Onaways from Maine that he helped plant, weed, water, grow and harvest. I sliced them (peel on of course) about 1/4" thick then drizzeld them with olive oil, sprinkled on a little dried parsley, rosemary, salt and pepper. I'm pretty tempted to agree with Evan. What little there was left over, I ate cold for breakfast - they were good that way, too! I also like to roast a chicken, which we did with the potatoes. After we are all done eating what we are going to eat for the main meal, I throw it in the crockpot with some chicken stock and some onions to make roasted chicken soup. I drain, fridge and defat, then heat the broth back up, put in more vegies and noodles and the leftover chicken off the bone. I can get three or even 4 meals from one bird that way.

i have a 'clear out the leftovers soup' on the stove right now... adzuki beans and black eyed peas, sweet and white potatoes, rice in a veggie broth and crushed tomato base started with onion, celery, gr pepper, garlic and a bit of white wine... i may throw in some kale before serving...
YUM! i love fall but just wish it got cooler quicker here in NC...

I come from an area where it begins snowing end of October/early November. So comfort food, soups, stews, spicy pies, hot chocolate, that sort of thing.

Lasagna, homemade pizza and anything else that warms the house while it's cooking. Although the weather has been so nice that I don't think I'll be wanting a roaring hot oven going anytime soon. Our town is having a chili festival soon, so I'm ready to get inspired for a great chili recipe to keep us warm all winter.

Such good comfort foods!!! I love making soups but not the runny kind. It really has to stick to your ribs or hubby and kids will never get full!!!

Turnip greens, pinto beans, fried potatoes and a big ole cast iron pan of crispy cornbread!!!! yummo! Then warm apple pie with ice cream and a cup of hot coffee for dessert.

It's not quite cold enough here, but in a few weeks the crock pot will not leave my counter top until spring. We love soups, stews and casseroles, those hearty tummy warming meals that make the house smell so great. I just saw a wonderful Shephard's Pie at the William Sonoma store and I can't wait to try it. Last year I found a chicken pot pie recipe from their catalog that turned out fantastic.

Sounds like we might need a "Soup-er-Stew Swap"

My sis in law makes the best bean soup IMO! If she makes it, she always makes a big pot and brings me some too, yummo!

I love soup, but am not a good soup maker myself :( That is why sis in law does it for me, YAY!

Also love stew and Hotch Potch (A Dutch stew, SO good!!)
Easy too:

Carrots (2/3)
Onions (1/3)
Potatoes
All put together in a pan, cook and mash and enjoy, YUMMO!!

I'm ready for my DH's chili. or maybe a batch of his red beans and rice. Both are great to eat watching football in the fall.

Around here one of the favorites is tuna noodle casserole and a close runner up is roast with potatoes and carrots and onions with homemade biscuits or cornbread. For dessert it would be pineapple upside down cake and berry cobbler...Debbie

My fave fall n'winter, stick-to-your-ribs meal is chicken and homemade noodles. Noodles are thickish and wholesome and delicious.

Chicken and dumplings....oh yeah!!!!! and Chicken pot pie, stew, roast with mashed potatoes and gravy, and of course chili with cornbread. Bring on the cooler weather!!! Oh, and greens, how can I forget those? :)

Thank God I live in the country!
prairie_princess Posted - Sep 22 2008 : 08:10:06 AM
yes, chicken and dumplings are definately one of those fall meals! i make this chicken/turkey creamy sauce (it has broccoli, onions, and sage in it... it smells just like homeade stuffing!) over cornmeal biscuits... it reminds me alot of chicken and dumplings. and i do the same thing... i buy lots of extra turkeys around thanksgiving when they are having good sales and make turkey throughout the year. i even have summer thanksgiving! only i switch out the sides for more summery fare, such as instead of pumpkin pie, i make lemon merengue pie!

I love putting on a big ole pot of chili. mmmmm. I love soups and stews too, but DH doesn't. When we lived in Ariz I got sick of the sunshine cause it just wasn't fall food weather! lol

I'm a soup n stew gal myself, but I also love making chicken pot pies, chicken n dumplings, meatloaf, and I'll make turkey even if it's not Thanksgiving. Of course I also love to bake bread, make cookies and pies too.
