Does anyone out there know how to make those "cookie" like tree ornaments that smell like cinnamon. I bought some at a craft fair that are really cute and shaped like gingerbread men. Please let me know. Thanks, Melanie

I made these years ago with a playgroup. We store ours in a coffee can between Christmases (also good for storing those painted dough ornaments). You can use royal icing or fabric paints (puffy) to decorate the ornaments. If you worry about someone or some animal eating it, use royal icing.

These really are great ornaments--they may rot if they got too much humidity, but in Eastern Oregon desert they last for years. I used to do a Christmas crafts day with local elementary students, and we would use paint pens to decorate--a favorite was Gingerbread people and white paint pens for "ric-rac" outlines, and black for eyes, red for lips, etc. Kids got real creative. There is also puff paint you can buy at craft stores.

Hey, Libbie. Post a picture of your tree when you have it decorated! Sounds lovely! I can already smell the cinnamon!

I'm going to add this to my "what we're going to do on the next rainy day" list - what a wonderful idea - you gals always come through with shining colors. This year, I think my Christmas tree will be these ornaments, a red gingham ribbon and gold or silver balls with white lights. Simple - safe - and yummy smelling!!!!

XOXO, Libbie

Be careful to hang them up out of the pets reach (although my cats will climb into the tree after them.) We lost a lot of the ornaments this way! But they sure did make the house smell nice. I used a plain old gingerbread cookie recipe for mine, punched a hole in them before baking and then just strung them with a pretty red satin ribbon - no decorations on them, just plain. They were really nice and made the house smell like cookies and cinnamon. But like I said, the cats and the dog ate them. The cat would knock them off and the dog would grab them. Finally the cat got so frustrated that she just started eating them while they were still on the tree. Found a lot of red satin ribbons on the floor under the tree! (Oh well, it kept the bugs from getting them.)

I make mine with glue. Here is a tip though. Check with a local school cafeteria. I was able to order a 1 gallon jug of cinnamon at a HUGE discount. I have enough cinnamon to make 1 MILLION ornaments! HA

We made a ton of these a few years ago. I really should sit with the kids and make more, they look so "country" and smell good.

I put mine in the dehydrator and they've lasted well. I didn't use the glue recipe. Infact I really didn't use any recipe. I started with a bowl of sauce and added cinamon until I had a soft dough. Then we rolled them out, cut them and laid them in the dehydrator. I don't remember how long it took. We had some bits left over so we added a little water rolled it up and made cinnamon beads.

I took a picture with my really awful camera - apologies.
See it here: http://web.mac.com/phase2design/ornaments.jpg

The lines you see in the large star are from the dehydrator.

I originally strung them with slices of dried orange, so that the shape was centered in the orange slice, then I knotted it, strung a bead, knot, loop for hanging, knot. The cinnamon ornaments outlasted the orange slices by about 2 years. Apparently I don't have the knack for drying oranges, they were either too thick which made them gummy and they went bad, or too dry and were brittle and broke.

I have been making these cinn. ornaments, left and right here, since I found the recipee on here, they are so fun to make. I used small chunks of the cinn, left over from the straw, that u make the hole with, for hanging, and made eyes, they seem to be staying good, and a pen or pencill just dab it lightly, to draw out nose, and mouth, it dries with the cookie ornament, eveyone around here,is soo excited. scrambling to make some for xmas, such a good idea. We taped a few on xmas gifts, with yarn int he hole of them to ahng on a tree, and put the recipee inside the gift, cool idea! I have been using saran wrap to roll them out i put one under and one over, it leaves a bit of crack look but i found it easier to peel off, to put out to dry, and u can smooth it out with your fingers or what ever. I also dry them on the saran wrap seems easier to peel off to turn, works well for me anyways, prob wax paper would be good, but didn't have any at the time, so will have to try that too. don't think they rot, probably too dry to rot, i do know they sure smell good.I put a whole bunch of them on my Charlie Brown tree i have in the porch ha ha! I am sooo glad to have found that recipee on here.grandkids love making them too. jo!

This is a good explanation.

We made these yesterday from the Mccormick recipe online. I am glad to know they will keep, mine didn't have glue. Found another two links today, I am a bit rushed, hope it all makes sense.

My husband rolled some out with a damp sponge in between the dough and the rolling pin, it seemed to help, the cracked surface indicated it was too dry, I had put a little cinnamon on top to roll, but probably shouldn't have.

Uh, this may sound really stupid, but if you wanted to decorate these ornaments, how would yo do that? Do you glue things to them? Or, like with sugar cookies or gingerbread, use royal icing? And, uh, another stupid question: can these ornaments rot? Thanks in advance! -Cat

Melanie, My daughter and I have made these in past years and I still have some - they still smell good, even after several years. The recipe I used was equal parts of ground cinnamon and applesauce (not the chunky kind). Then you mix it up and roll it out, cut it out with cookie cutters and make a hole for a ribbon with a straw. Then you put them on cookie racks to dry, which takes several days. That's it! Enjoy! Marget- I have never tried them in the dehydrator but it might dry them too quickly (ha!) and become even more brittle. Not sure...let me know if you try it.

Girls, I threw away my Elmer's glue recipe because I think that glue smells BAD!It didn't seem to make a superior product when included, in my opinion. Does anyone have a different experience? It would be nice to add something that makes them more durable without sacrificing scent.

with a happy heart

Here's the link to the site that has the recipe I have. I think it would be really YUMMY with the addition of the cloves, nutmeg & allspice like brambles recipe.

Could you give us the recipe using elmers glue......Thank you
FlipFlopFarmer Posted - Nov 13 2005 : 4:35:58 PM
I was thinking of making these this year too. The recipe I have is very similar only it also has elmers glue in it?

I was thinking that this would be a cute gift tag as well assumeing you could write on it with a fine tip marker of some sort.

Seems to me that adding a few drops of cinnamon oil while mixing would strengthen the fragrance. Or you could drip a little on old ones to refresh them.

Kewl idea for ornaments, you guys!

Ms.Bramble wonderwoman, knew we could count on ya to come through... We made these for my youngest girls preschool gifts. Naturally the queen of disorganization here lost the recipe. These are so sweet hanging on a tree with other things the kids make. We outlined our trees with green glitter.
