MONKEY BREAD!!! Why did I miss this sweet treat for all these years??? Where has it been hiding? I picked up a mix from Target because I had a coupon and all I can say is "OH MY"!!! My dentist and thighs are not happy but my tummy sure is...oh yum!!!!

My mom used to make Monkey Bread, the cinnamon-sugary-buttery one, and she also made the more savory one with all the herbs, but for some reason we only called that Pull-apart Bread, no cool jungle names.

I got my latest King Arthur Flour catalog the other day and noticed they had Monkey Bread mixes and even a pan specifically for it. It was basically just a flattened tube pan, but I thought it was funny that this treat is apparently becoming so popular again.

yep, it's a staple at our house at Christmas! Wouldn't be the same without it. Goes by several names. monkeybread and pluckets are the two I am familiar with. We use the pillsbury biscuits cut each one into fourths, roll in a ball then in cinnamon and sugar and place in a bundt pan. pour melted butter over it. The sugar and cinamon make a carmelized topping. Mm mm good!

My monkey bread is soooo yummy...it's the same ol' except you take your parker house rolls and throw em in a bundt pan (greased). Then you take brown sugar, cinnamon, nuts of choice, and then one large package of any flavor Jello pudding mix--my favorite is either butterscotch or cheesecake--mix the dry up and sprinkle over the rolls. Then take 2 sticks of butter, melt the buggers, then pour over the rolls. Cover and let rise over night. Then bake em at 350 for 45-50 minutes or until golden. Invert while still warm. All the dry turns into the gooey goodness, and HOLY CROW!!! The pudding makes it even better!!!!

I make mine like jenny does, using cheater bisquets, get the really cheap ones. Break them up into individual bisquets, quarter those. Put them in a zip lock bag with a mixture of white sugar and cinnamin. I put mine in a bundt pan, doble the top with a cube of butter, cut up and bake. I flip the pan out onto a jelly roll pan (cookie sheet with sides)as the butter, sugar and cinn make a syrup, so it doesnt get everywhere.

BTW: its also called Monkey Balls. After you see them in the cinn/sugar mixture, you'll know why...

Rose makes monkey bread for us sometimes. It's wonderful. I think she uses the frozen dough in a bag for dinner rolls? It is hard to resist, for sure.

LInda, your version sounds wonderful for a big spaghetti dinner! Or just with spaghetti sauce as a dip in front of a football game. I think I'll use that one.

My grandma would use pineapple juice to make a heavy syrup with brown sugar and then sprinkle the bread with coconut...it was goo-y and yummy

Sweet yeast dough rolled into walnut sized pieces dipped into caramel sauce or very heavily in brown sugar and butter and chopped pecans or walnuts, stacked in layers in a nonstick tube or bundt pan, allowed to rise and baked. Think small stuck together nuggets of sticky buns. You tear off the individual pieces to eat. I guess the name references a monkey's table manners! You can do the same type of deal with ordinary not so sweet white bread dough and butter with parmesan cheese and chopped rosemary.

Oh I have seen something like that before. My Aunt Betty used to make it (she called it something different) using pillsbury "can" bisquits (My kids and I call them "cheater bisquits") and she would dip each one into carmelly stuff and then press down into a buttered bundt pan and bake and sprinkle cinnamon sugar over all...a real sugar high for sure!
