I was out walking this morning and saw that the chokecherries are getting ripe. I have eaten the syrup. I am interested in making some of my own. Anyone have a good recipe? Thanks
Karla

You know, Vicki/Pearlsnjeans, they are very easy to grow from seed, so you can bring them back with a minimum of effort. Last year I took all my chokecherry pits, dug a hole, and in the spring voila! Of course, they came up as a mass and I separated them and potted them, but you could easily just thin out a mass planting to the strongest one. The ones I planted singly didn't sprout, don't know why. Good luck!

Karla, you are so fortunate to have chokecherries close by. They are getting harder to find each year where I'm at. So many folks building on the sidehills and just bulldozing over all the wonderful treats!

hey Michelle, Thanks so much for posting all of those recipes. I will be starting this weekend. The bushes by my house are just loaded. Thanks again. I will let everyone know how it all turns out. Karla

Had to check on our chokecherries last night while working on the fence...sucked all the moisture right out of my face...not ready here yet. Okay, I just looked up my chokecherry recipes and will post them to my blog. Wine, syrup, butter, pies...c'mon over and I'll put up recipes shortly.

Weh we were in Wyoming last week, I missed the boat on this one.

I know about chokecherries and was highly encouraged to buy something with them in it.

I passd up jar of chokcherry jelly in South Dakota at a gas station.

they wanted 8.00 for a pint

maybe i should have bought it,,,,but at that price I also didn't want to take a chance on having to ditch it at the airport.

Michelle, I would love to have your chokecherry/apple butter recipe. I have had the wine. Hutterite colonies in our area make it. It is good. Thanks so much !!

I haven't done chokecherry syrup, but last year I made chokecherry/apple butter and it was delicious! I'd happily share the recipe if you are interested. I've also heard chokecherry wine is really good, but I haven't tried it yet. Be sure to remove the pits...they have arsenic.

We make a difference.

Hi Karla! I am making my first batch of blackberry syrup today and will do it about the same way as Vicki suggests, but I will process mine for 10 minutes in the canner. I googled "canning blackberry syrup" and found several sites that all suggested about the same thing. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Hi Karla

I've been making chokecherry syrup for years, the same way my grandma did. Don't have a recipe, just use equal amounts of juice and sugar, bring to a full boil for a few minutes. I put the syrup in pint jars and cover with a cloth. They seal from the heat. I like it best on waffles. Yum!

Hi Karla:
I have never heard of chokecherries, maybe they don't grow in Louisiana. Give it time, the farmgirls will answer if they know of any recipes. I do love syrup. Have you ever tasted Steen's Syrup? Oh, it's so good. Really thick.
