Posted - Aug 13 2004 : 10:41:19 AM This is the title of a book by Carole Latimer. Didn't quite know whether to post it here or under books...probably could have put it under cookbooks too.
For any of you who backpack or camp or just enjoy outdoor cooking this is a really good and useful book. I am not sure it is still in print since i got this copy at the library but it is pretty easy to find out of print books on the web. There is a newer book out called Lip smackin' Backpackin' Lightweight Trail Tested Recipes for Backcountry Trips but i prefer Wilderness Cuisine after trying recipes from both books. I enjoy cooking on the trail but also like to have most everything prepped at home first so that i can quickly fix a meal while camping. This book has some recipes and some foods and combinations that i would have not thought of using on the trail but having tried them i was amazed at how good they were. Top Ramen and power bars get old fast.
Do any of the rest of you have any favorites (recipes or books of recipes) for camping?

Posted - Aug 15 2004 : 8:48:40 PM Hi, Roberta. I'll have to look for Wilderness Cuisine, since you like it better. I also have lipsmackin' Backpacking. I haven't tried the recipes yet..lots of reasons to put off the best plans. But you are getting me in the mood again.We use The One Burner Gourmet by Harriet Barker, and Simple Foods for the Pack by Vikki Kinmont and Claudia Axell. I really haven't used any of the recipies on the trail, or for camping, etc. I have used them for home kitchen, as many times we are down to two for meals. I like having foods on hand that I don't have to worry about spoilage. The One Burner Gourmet has great recipies, but they use a lot of "cans", and we are trying to get away from that. |
