We just harvested a clothes basket full of pears from the pear tree today! We figure we got about 60 lbs of pears off of the tree this time around..last year was about 30 lbs..this year..definitely more than double that! So..I have a clothes basket overflowing with pears. They soon will be ripening...and as such... I NEED pear recipes!
I do know that with some of them I will peel them and sugar them and add red hot candies and let them cook down in the crockpot.
Some I will again add to the crockpot with cinnamon and sugar to make a "pear butter".
But...what else can be done with all of these pears?
Thanks in advance!!

~Tina

If anyone has anymore recipes please post 'em! The pickers here left tons on the trees so we've got loads. (Wish there were some farmgirls around here I could share the bounty with!) Every flat surface in the sunroom is covered with Barletts ripening away.

You could add chopped pears to breads...like pumpkin, gingerbread, zucchini or take your blueberry muffin recipe and omit the blueberries. Then add some cinnamon and chopped pears.
For a dinner party, you could peel and hollow the pear out from the bottom and stuff it with a little butter, brown sugar, orange or lemon zest, pinch of salt, cinnamon stick and any other spices that you enjoy. Then bake the pear until tender. The filling will ooze into the pan and you have roasted pears with a sauce! Serve warm with vanilla ice cream OR I fill mine with vanilla bean custard.

A friend of mine and I made "pear products" on Tuesday. Pear Jelly and Pear Butter - which we are really calling "Spiced Pear Sauce". It tastes great, but in tripling the recipe and using smaller pears - we underestimated the amt. of pears to use.

All in all, we produced 78 beautiful jars of "pear products".

My friend also made some pear cookies the following day which were delicious. We are going to tackle some more "pear product producing" next week. So much fun to do with a friend.

Hey, Tina! I just peel, core and slice mine in half and put them up in a light syrup. We use them for that 50's style pear salad with the mayo, cheese and a maraschino cherry. My family loves 'em and they're so easy to make. I also think I still have a family recipe for pear butter. I'll look tonight -- just know, I only get to a computer with internet access on Tuesdays so it'll be next week before I can get it to you. Hope that helps!

I was wondering about pear recipes too. My neighbor has trees ready to pick and every year I think that I will do something and haven't. Tina, what did you do with all of yours?
I was searching for pear jelly recipes, but might make pear butter to put in a gift basket for all of the neighbors for Christmas this year. Would welcome other suggestions though too.

Tina- I just made Gingered Pear Sauce for the first time the other day and it turned out yummy! My friend's husband brought me a huge Tupperware bowl full of pears. I don't know how many pounds it was, but I must have peeled and chopped about 25 pears of various sizes. Anyway, I had made some of my ginger syrup and I used that instead of sugar. (It was about 1- 1/2 cups of syrup.) I cooked it until the pears broke down, ran it through the food processor to get any stubborn bits and reduced it down to applesauce consistency.
It is delicious! Especially over pork and carrots, believe it or not. :)
Do you have MaryJane's Idea book? She has a recipe for Crackly Pear Cake that is out of this world!

Have fun with your pears! :)
