I was lucky enough to stumble upon a HUGE bush of wild blackberries growing in a field next to our apartment complex. The bushes are absolutely loaded with berries! Most of them aren't ripe yet, but I picked about 1.5 cups yesterday and I'm sure I'll be able to pick lots more.

I'm hoping to make blackberry freezer-jam with them.

I also thought about doing a mixed berry jam. Has anyone tried this?

Any other good blackberry recipes ya'll could share with me?

Blackberry cobbler...yuuuummmmy! When I was a kid we'd go to my grandparents cabin in S. Illinois and there were tons of wild blackberry bushes. We'd all go blackberry picking and then my mom would make cobbler and blackberry jam. What I remember most about blackberry picking as a kid were all the chigger bites that grandma would put campho phenic(sp?) on to stop them from itching.

I know!!! When I mentioned it the first time, Aunt Jenny said, "just don't be like Anne with Marilla's cordial, Jonni!" And I laughed and laughed...cause, I probably would be

As soon as I read about the cordial, it made me think of Anne in Anne of Green
Gables, when she and her friend got drunk on Marilla's cordial.

I have never thought of making cordial, but that's a good idea, if ever I come across some brambles, I'm watering my raspberries every day...

We are covered up in blackberries. I've already put a gallon in the freezer, made cobblers, and prepared 4 batches of jelly and the season is juat getting started.

Yes, you can do mixed berry jellies. I have mixed blackberries with grapes, elderberries, and blueberries. All turned out good.

I can't wait for the cordial recipe. Next we will try it!:-)

I'd be glad to, Shirley...I'll post it this evening when I get home from the office. It makes a generous quart, and calls for 4 cups of berries, so if you have a large crop, you can make a nice bottled product for gifts or sale.

Jonni - please share your cordial recipe. I would love to try something new with the berries on our farm.

You can also make juice out of them, and can. Then come winter drink it when you feel a bit under the weather.

Amanda, we make jam constantly from wild brambles, and this year we're making blackberry cordial. The only thing I would be concerned about--and you might be able to ask around the maintenance guys, is about chemical spraying.

We know ours are safe because they're in our lower yard, but you never know being so close by...if they're in the "clear" I'd be glad to give you the cordial recipe--the jam is one right off the box of purejel or whatever. Simple and good.
