I am just curious as to the price of groceries in the different areas that we are all from.
Basic things like bread, milk, butter, eggs etc.
Eggs here, large 1 dozen $2.62
Bread just a plain store bought, not homemade, white $2.22
butter, 1 pound $4.68 (that is for butter from the dairy that I milk for...strorebrand butter is $3.75 I think)
and milk.....hmmmm, I'll have to check that one out.

Ok, over here in Germany the prices are as follows- a liter of organic fresh milk at the supermarket, $1. One bread (1.5lbs) $4. (not white toast-like, this is farm style bread with a firm crust and wholegrain too) A pound of butter, $2,80. As for eggs, no idea. I haven't bought eggs in a store for years. Before I got my chickens I bartered homemade jam for eggs from a friend's farm.

I need to get over to Sam's it has been a while. Locally I get butter for 2.89 a pound. Cheese almost $19 for 5 lbs... arggggg... I rarely get cheese anymore.. but I wanted to serve cheese and crackers with all the fruit we are getting. I don't buy bread- too expensive. we eat a lot of pasta salad, chili and chips, smoothies..

Ahh, Ms.Lilly- Tillamook Cheddar! One of the things I miss most since moving back east. I went to their factory once and had a blast- who knew they made ice cream too!

I sell my free-range eggs for 2.00 doz/ 3.00 18 count, and no one complains except 1 of my friends told me I should charge more. At the local farmers market a lady there sells hers for 5.00 a dozen and sells out every week. I make our bread so I can't help there. Butter is 2.80 a pound and I buy whole milk for 2 for 4.98 otherwise it is 2.79 a gallon. Cheese is 5.79 a pound for Tillamook cheddar. All are local products here. I don't even think about buying the organic stuff, way to expensive. 5.69 a gallon for organic milk and organic butter is about 6.00 a pound.

Can't help you much with the price of milk & eggs, as we have our own. I know they are getting higher all the time, because I hear people complaining. (Fed prices are going up too though.)
Bread is about $2.29 a loaf, unless you buy the cheaper store brand.
Butter had been being about $2.49 a lb. and I would buy when it would be on sale for $1.99. The other day at the grocery store I noticed it had jumped to $2.79.
Cheese is high here too. I am ordering my own cultures so I can make it for about $1.00 a lb. Hope it comes out good. It will really help save.

Prices are around the same for us in East Texas, maybe give or take a penny. But cheese! Holy cow (at least the cow must be Holy) b/c in one months time it went from 3.28 a pound to 4.75 a pound. And as you know, kids love cheese. What can ya do??

Eggs: organic $3.50 (not organic, anywhere from .99 on up)
Milk: organic 1/2 gallon $2.89
Bread: ezekial $3.99
Butter: $2.84 last week on sale

Mellaisbella--I charge $2/dozen for my girls' eggs (natural, free-range). I sell mainly to friends and family and no one bats an eye at $2. It is worth it to me just to make a little on the side when my main goal is to have fresh eggs for my family!
Here in NE Kansas, 1/2 gallon of locally bottled milk is $3. |

I sure wish our organic prices were the same as the rest of the country's. Organic butter is $5.29 a pound, organic milk is $6.39 a gallon (Whole Food is actually the cheapest), we buy artisan bread for $4-5 a loaf, organic eggs are up to $5 a dozen! I've had to back off quite a lot on buying organic anything these days. They priced themselves right out of my market. I do the majority of my shopping at Nature's Best, a Mexican owned grocery store that caters to Mexican, Chinese, Indian and Polish. Their prices for produce and meat are the best around, so is the quality. They don't carry organic, but their produce is the freshest year round.

i honestly don't much look at the price of grocery items .. i'm a real 'bargain hunter' in other areas of my life .. and sometimes i'll notice that a 'price' seems kinda' high .. but it "usually" won't stop me from adding it to my grocery cart if it is something we really love. hank LOVES fresh fruit and i LOVE fresh veggies .. so i just get what it want and i think i save money by not buying a lot of pre-packaged stuff! my rationalle is that it all about evens out.
i rarely buy eggs (unless making a dish that calls for them .. i get EGGS when we have breakfast 'out' .. or if i have company! (do this to help keep our cholesterol down). and i rarely buy 'red' meats to cook at home (another restaurant splurge .. but then .. we do eat at a lot of restaurants .. i especially like 'ethnic' ones .. chinese food .. mexican food .. indian food .. greek food ... oh yummmmmmmm!)
we like fresh-ground coffee beans and i do like those international coffees sometimes .. and i figger .. the price is what it is .. and there's no gittin' around it. it's not like we have a ton of grocery store choices here in this little area .. we have one .. Sav-A-Lot .. i think it's called .. but i do NOT like the variety offered there and don't shop there .. where i might save a 'few' pennies .. but i jus' don't go there.
It is amazing how it seems just about EVERYTHING is a little higher these days .. what with the cost of GAS transporation getting it here.

So to average out the prices it looks like nation wide we are close to the same. I belong to a CSA for fruits and veggies , but the real killers are as Julie mentioned--non food item that we need. MB

1 dozen free range eggs cost about $3.27. Milk, store brand is $4.29--organic is about $5.50. Bread runs about $2.79 for good whole wheat. Butter I can get for about $3 but I get mine from Sam's for about $2.

While we are talking about food prices....I listed that eggs in the grocery store (non-organic) large size are $2.62 a dozen. I have free range hens that I feed non-medicated non-homrmone feed too as well as the grass and insects they eat. How much should I charge a dozen. Just wondering what you all thought.
oh, our gas is $1.35 a litre

I pay $3 for a dozen free-range, organic eggs from the CSA we belong to, as well as $6 for a gallon of fresh whole organic milk (past. but non-hom.).
At the grocery store, a loaf of the store brand Italian bread I usually buy has risen from $.99 last year to $1.49 last week!!
I get my butter from a little shop that sells Amish-produced wares, and I think I pay over $4 for a pound (I'm not even really sure - I usually buy it in big "chunks"!) :-D

Good Topic. I live in California so I always count on things being more expensive.
Free Range Antibiotic/Hormone Free Eggs - 3.50 (Organic 4-6.00)
Thankfully we get eggs from the neighbor for now til we get our girls real soon.
Bread - A loaf of bread lasts us for almost 10 days and we only eat sprouted grain bread - 3.69
Milk - We live in Northern CA dairy farm land (didn't know there was such a place huh? ;) Local Organic Milk is 3.49 a half gallon
Butter - we can never afford organic, we buy what's on sale or buy local (see milk talk) and really only use it for baking (which we do alot of)
I just realized that every item I listed is local to the area or the state, and still....the prices!
I know no one asked, but just to put it out there, we've been paying $4.79 a gallon for gas for over 3 weeks now. |

Butter is about $3.00 a pound
Milk is $3.00 a gallon for regular (not organic) storebought whole milk (and we use 7 to 10 per week when the cow is dry..ugh!)
the bread I will buy if I don't bake is right at $3.00 a loaf
I am not sure about eggs right now. Havn't bought for almost 2 years.

Butter always gets me, 4.09$ a block - makes baking expensive!
Milk, for 4L is 5.19$
Not sure about eggs - my ladies keep me well-supplied :)
Bread is a good buy @ 2 for 5$ on sale.
I'm at the bottom of my flour barrel though, looks like I'll have to pay 12$ for 10kg soon!

eggs (storebrand) $3.69 for 18, milk (storebrand) $3.50 on sale, bread cheap white $1.19 good bread $2 for $5 on sale, butter $2 for $5 on sale, cant wait till my cow and chicks start producing! eggs will hopefully start in october and milk no clue as we dont knwo if she is brd yet! peace connie in alaska |

I have been paying 3.28 a dozen for free range organic eggs. I CAN NOT wait until my 4 girls start laying!!!!
I buy Organic Milk which is 3.50 per half gallon.
My store does not carry organic butter but it is around 3.50 or so for 4 sticks!
We are not big bread eater unless we have pasta. When we do we get a loaf of italian bread which was only .98 at the bakery the other day.
Personally I have been more impressed with the increase in price of things like toilet paper and laundry soap. I think I paid 12 bucks for Tide Coldwater the other day. We ONLY have cold water and the poweder soaps clog the machine so I really dont see myself switching.

I'm paying $2 a dozen for free range eggs from a friend, but I know they're closer to $3 at the store. I paid $2.50 a loaf for a good whole wheat loaf of bread yesterday (on sale) - ususally $3.69. I buy my butter at Costco, so it's a little cheaper = around $2 a pound. Organic non-fat milk is about $3 a half gallon where I shop.
