Posted - Jul 04 2008 : 6:36:24 PM Today was a good day from the produce guy.. 12 cases of green seedless grapes- all in excellent condition- we will eat fresh and freeze some for a cool treat 37 large packages of whole mushrooms- 15 packages are in the dehydrator now and will dehydrate another 15, eat 7 fresh 1 large box of zuccini 70 packages of cherry tomatoes- any thoughts of what I should do with these? 1 grocery bag full of green beans will eat fresh and blanch and freeze 50 lbs of potatoes 1 case serano peppers- will freeze 1 case anaheim peppers- will freeze some fresh dill.. yum figure that this is almost $1000 with our local prices I share this with you all because I want for you that are struggling with gas prices and food prices to have hope. We were spending over $1200 a month in food. It was very hard for us to spend more than our rent in food. I prayed that God would show me a way and shortly thereafter Boyd showed up with a boatload of produce with more the next day.. and it has been this way for the last month and a half! Looks like it will continue on for a long time- as long as his friend continues to work at this grocery distribution center. So God provided for our needs as always. So have hope.. God will provide a way to stretch that dollar.. hugs!

Posted - Jul 06 2008 : 10:25:18 AM Yayyy for Nevada! Not everyone can see the beauty in the open spaces. I was born in Reno, Larry in Wells and we don't want to live anywhere else. Both my kids were born in CA, but have learned that it's much better here. Glad to know Debra and family are going to stay here and make the best of it. |

Posted - Jul 06 2008 : 10:05:49 AM You know once we made the decision to stay we really started to find more to be thankful for. Jeff and I took Sam to get stitches out yesterday. We drove around Carson City to run some errands and he was so happy. He found joy in the area that he had refused to notice before because he knew we were not staying. I love Carson City and Reno- it is nice to have everything so close by. In Ca I would have to go to Stockton to go to all the stores I can go to in Carson City- but those stores were allllllll over Stockton- from one end to the other- many side roads and lots of traffic, and lots of gang activity. Scary. I love the everything I need in Carson is right on one road. Makes it so easy. Anyway, you are right we do need to bloom where we are planted. Can't wait to have you and the boys over- my boys would love to make some friends. And let me know when the homeschool group starts up again.

Posted - Jul 06 2008 : 09:16:00 AM I am so happy you have made a decision to stay! Your new place sounds great, it's so nice to have hope and to dream about the future. Forts and gardens are so much fun. Honestly, I lived in Nevada most of my life and find beauty, in the landscape, reading old western books and Zane Gray really helped me enjoy the "western" feel of our area. You know the idea of "bloom where you are planted"
Enjoy your visit with your family.

Posted - Jul 06 2008 : 07:28:01 AM they look delicious. We are going to rip up the front area of the house- there is a circular drive that goes in front of the house- in the middle of the U of the drive is all weeds and sage brush. we are going to rip that up- put in a bit of grass but also some roses, blueberry bushes I hope someday and a few raised beds. We have the whole back that in one corner we plan on putting in a fort for the boys and the rest will be gardens. We can't wait. Guess what??? We are staying! We have decided to put down our roots. Jenny, salsa is a good idea too. My parents are coming today and I am sending some home with them. We haven't seen them in a year. Dad works on commission at a chevy dealership- in the service dept. they have had a rough year- some months just having $60 for groceries- so I am sending them home with lots of food.

Posted - Jul 05 2008 : 7:44:05 PM Debra - Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle? It seems to me that Barbara Kingsolver talked about drying cherry tomatoes either in a dehydrator or the oven, then using them in the winter on pizza and such.... Lucky you to have such a bounty of vegetables....

Posted - Jul 04 2008 : 7:37:58 PM Thanks Gals. We are going to see how much we can eat fresh then I will pop in the freezer whatever we can't eat. I just got all of the mushrooms out of the styrofoam containers so they wouldn't spoil quicker. the counters are covered in produce. Have to take Sam in to have his stitches removed tomorrow. will deal with this after that.

Posted - Jul 04 2008 : 6:51:50 PM Debra, the cherry tomatoes might make a cool treat like the frozen grapes. I would just fill a ziploc and freeze them as is to add to soups, sauces and such next winter. They'll get mushy when defrosted, but won't matter in a sauce. Pop off the stems, whirl in the food processor and you're done. I used to do it with excess large tomatoes and it was just fine. Remember I have the crusher/strainer for you to use if you'd like too. |

Posted - Jul 04 2008 : 6:43:25 PM God is so good! I am so happy for you with your many blessings! As far as the cherry tomatoes go.....try blanching them and smash them up and freeze them. I see no reason why you can't do this and then later add them to homemade soups and chili's. You'd be surprised at what I have frozen! Susan |
