Can you drink buttermilk straight or would it be nasty??? I got some on sale and am going to make pancakes, muffins, etc but was wondering if I could give it to Charlie to drink.

if you have more buttermilk than you can use before it expires (tho that is a really funny thought since cultured buttermilk is already soured! lol)you can always freeze it for baking. it will keep for a very long time that way. peace connie in alaska |

I also remeber drinking buttermilk with my dad with spinkled pepper on it! The thought of drinking it now kinda gags me :) But I sure loved it when I was little.

BUTTERMILK PIE!!! My favorite, chilled! I can eat the whole thing! If any one is interested in the recipe I will post it! So easy and delicious!

Hi! I'm new here, first post.  Just laughing to myself that my first post is about loving buttermilk! But, I LOVE buttermilk. My dad is the one that taught me to love it. He would pour me a glass and sprinkle some pepper in, stir it up and yummmmmm.
I never drink it now cause my kids and hubby don't like it. |

I used to drink it when I was a kid. My mom always had some & I would drink a few sips. I always liked it, but can't imagine gulping it. It is an acquired taste. I kinda miss it. Maybe I'll go get some, but it won't be the same as the stuff the Coors milkman brought fresh (in a glass bottle with a paper tab pull lid )that he put in our galvanized milk box out front.. I have a great recipe for fried catfish, where you soak the filets in buttermilk for a couple of hours before you bread and fry...so yummy. However, I have the same reaction as Charlie did when I drink it...only like it for cooking!

you can actually make a nice dessert with the buttermilk..take a package of instant vanilla pudding and instead of using milk use 1 cup buttermilk..it will make it thicker too..then add a tub of whipped topping, stir together.. drain a can of mandarin oranges, lightly fold into the pudding..then crush up some keebler chocolate covered grahams and gently fold into pudding mix..spread into a pan and smooth... then top with a few more chocolate covered grahams..sinfully rich ..but it tastes good.

My grandma always used buttermilk to fry her chicken. Dip the chicken in the milk, then the flour/salt/pepper mix. Do that twice and then fry. Makes for extra crispy chicken. Mmmmmm....
I've known some older people who liked to drink it straight. I've never been brave enough to try it. I had some in the fridge here while back, all my kids had to give it a go. Yeah no takers.

I have a great buttermilk pound cake recipe! It's my mother's and it is SO good! :D Let me know if you want it. You can drink it, but I don't like it. I did once have it with corn bread when I was little and for some reason I remember I DID like it.... but I think it must've been a special cornbread because I can't recapture that feeling with cornbread. LOL. |

I remember my mom crumbling corn bread up in a bowl and pouring buttermilk over it and eating it. She was big into the bowl of something with milk/buttermilk over it now that I think of it. She would feed me saltine crackers crushed up in a bowl with milk over them, and bread broken up in a bowl with some sugar and milk over it too. I remember getting a big bowl of rice from my daughter in law's rice cooker and pouring about 1/2 cup of sugar, cinnamon, and milk over it and taking a big bite - I was horrified to find out that it was SALT in her cannister and not sugar!! Nasty!!!

I just gave Charlie some and he tasted it...stood there...shuddered...and ran away!! HA!! I guess that answers that!! I don't like it straight myself but I like the tang in pancakes and especially a coffee cake.

My dad drinks buttermilk with pepper sprinkled on it! I don't like it too much by itself. I will eat/drink it poured over frosted flakes. I know that sounds weird - I learned that when I was an exchange student in Sweden long ago!

If you didn't have a fresh pan of cornbread every other day; she would start fussin'
My Mom's and Dad's Mom use to make buttermilk in the " old fashion churns"
I tried " Helping Mom; with the chruning; it wasn't easy

That's only kind of milk my mom would ever drink - seems to have fallen out of style. I know a lot of older people who love a tall glass of cold buttermilk. I just can't bring myself to try it!

I actually have a recipe that calls for buttermilk pancakes and muffins but I assume you could. I like Judith's suggestions too.

Back in the old days freckles weren't desireable; I remember hating mine when I was little.
When you use buttermilk in a recipe you add a pinch of baking soda. When I make biscuits with sweet milk I use 3 tsp. of baking powder; when I make biscuits with buttermilk I use 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder and 1/2 tsp. baking soda.

Fade freckles???  I ENVY my sister's ADORABLE sunkisses!!! Who would want to fade their freckles?? LOL
I might have to give buttermilk a try, I've never bought any... when you bake with it, Heather, do you just use it like you would regular milk in a recipe?

My father and husband love buttermilk! Let Charlie try it; it may be an acquired taste. Buttermilk is the best for making biscuits and chocolate cake. It's also supposed to be good on your skin for fading freckles but I never tried that.
