I have to admit that I don't use this item much so whenever a recipe calls for it, I have to run out and get some. Today, I made a lemon icebox pie which is chilling now and it called for two cans. Anyone have an opinion on using condensed milk versus making a cooked pudding? Just curious...

Aunt Jenny is the greatest! Thanks for the recipe; so easy, and it can't get any fresher than that!

Jenny,
Thank you so much for the recipe! that is so cool...what's all this other stuff you know and where is it posted...maybe I can search on Aunt Jenny! I love being self-sufficient and anything that helps me get there. I don't use a lot of sweetened condensed milk but I always have those ingredients on hand and now I know I wouldn't have to go to the store for it!
I'm taking baby steps but MJ's and this board and postings are like my dream come true...like I've been waiting my whole life just for this group! Y'all are FANTASTIC!

I only keep powdered milk on hand for emergencies (I DO have a cow!) and this is an exellent way to use it and keep it rotated and fresh. And saves a trip to the store..always a good thing in my book!

Agreed, Lisa...I wish Aunt Jenny was MY Aunt Jenny. To know what she knows!

Thanks for sharing your recipe, Jenny. I'm going to make something for the 4th and I'll probably utilize this for it :)

I love sweetened condensed milk! When I have extra left in the can after making something with it, I take graham crackers and dip them in it and eat them!

Cherriepie, sweetened condensed milk does have a lot of sugar added, if you just remove some moisture you get evaporated milk. :)

You never cease to amaze me! I am considering packing up & moving west of the Mississippi just so I can be closer to your wealth of Farmgirl knowledge.. Maybe it will rub off...

It is a simple recipe...
Sweetened condensed milk
1 cup plus 2 TBsp instant dry milk
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup warm water
Add the dry milk to the warm water and mix well. do this in a double boiler over hot water , or you can set this pan into another larger pan with hot water in it (to make your own double boiler..this is what I do) and stir in the sugar until dissolved. Store in fridge if you arn't using it right away. Equal to one can of sw. cond. milk. Works great!

I would also love the recipe. I've never heard of a recipe for SCM. So many times a recipe has called for it and I, like Kimberly have to run out to the grocery for it.

I make a "lemonade" pie that sounds similar but only calls for 1 can of SCM...it is so easy and refreshing in the summer and great if you're short on time! I put a twisted lemon slice on top and some zest and everyone thinks I went to so much trouble....little do they know! LOL! But not sure how "healthy" it is?

The lemon icebox pie I made (recipe from Screen Doors and Sweet Tea) turned out great - but you are right, it is really sweet. It's interesting that condensing the milk and removing water makes that much difference in the sweetness.

Aunt Jenny, I'd love it. I don't use it very often, but every now and again a recipe calls for it. I always loved "elsie" on the can label :)

The first pie I learned to make as a child just took sweetened condensed milk and lime juice in a graham cracker crust. It is awfully sweet but I was fascinated by how it firms up as you stir it. Hmmmm - I wonder if I have some in the pantry. I don't use it too much either and if you keep it too long (like a few years!) it turns kind of brown in the can but still tastes the same. I guess if you are in the mood for something easy and sweet, go with the s.c.m. - or not in the mood for all that stirring.
