I helped my kiddos make freezer jam from strawberries a few weeks ago. It was fun and sooo easy. And it turned out very yummy.

I can't wait 'til the blueberries and blackberries are ripe. I'm going to try making 'real' jam/jelly then.

How fun...I love canning jam!
Marie..my mom used parrafin on her jams and jellies too (when she made them...she wasn't very domestic..but now and then would do jam) and she tells me that she still feels like it keeps it fresher than sealing in a canning jar..haha.

Marie- My mom did the same thing- poured parrafin over the top to seal her jelly. I know what you mean about storage in an apartment. You have to get very creative! I used to put things under beds, under sofas and chairs, under tables (and then threw a tablecloth over it so you couldn't see the "stuff". Even in our house, I still find myself doing things like that. Our bed is up on risers, and that is where I keep all of my canning equiptment! Plus cans of wheat and rice.
I had such a nice time with Amy and her children. I think I may adopt Lucy and Larkin as surrogate grandchildren until I get some of my own! lol

Hmm... Reminds me of when I was a little girl and I'd come home from school to a sweet surprise: Mama had made concord grape jelly! She used to use wax to make sure it stayed fresh until we opened it, then it lasted maybe a week in the fridge. Oooh, her jelly was sooo yummy... I tried making it a few years ago, but tweaked the recipe to lower the amount of sugar and make it healthier. Turned out just as good, and it's so easy!
I'm hoping to make some jellies and jams this year, but apartment life makes for few places for storage...

Congratulations on making your own jam. I've beek making mine for a long time and made my first raspberry jelly a couple of years back. I was a bit impatient and the jelly is not clear like store bought, but has better flavor.

Did you make cooked jam or freezer jam? I really like the freezer jam, except that it never quite gets sturdy enough while the cooked jam is a bit stiff to spread.

Looking forward to canning more this year. Hope I can find more half pint jars because a pint is too much for one.

Congratulations! There is nothing like homemade jam--I can eat it right out of the jar!
