DH's breakfast every morning is poptarts! I myself would get bored with the same ol' same ol', but he is pretty content. However, in an effort to be healthier and to cut unnecesary grocery costs, I would love some ideas of to-go breakfasts. He ALWAYS eats in the car, in business/ office attire, so non-messy foods are the only requirement. Ideas?

Alee, I used to feel like Doug about breakfast. Probably because I starved myself as a kid (gymnastics) and NEVER ate breakfast up until about a year ago. Just the thought of food first thing in the morning made me nauseous. I could handle a little bit of cold cereal with just a smidgen of milk or a banana or toast and that was it. But usually, it was just coffee or tea. It made Mother's Day breakfast in bed really easy.

Well, in my efforts to lose weight (still unsuccessful) I've come to realize that eating in the morning is far better than filling up at night. So, I've forced myself to eat breakfast every morning, gradually increasing what I eat then and seriously decreasing what I eat at dinner (if I eat dinner at all). It has helped a great deal in that I can have a huge bowl of oatmeal or other hot cereal with fruit and nuts and milk or homemade pancakes or french toast and I don't feel icky after. I still have to water down oj and I still can't eat greasy anything in the morning, but I suppose it's healthier anyway that I leave the grease out of it. Now, I actually feel hungry in the morning and not at all hungry at dinner time. So, it makes it much easier to dish up a saucer of food at dinner instead of a dinner plate.

Try some light stuff on him for a while and you could gradually change over to stuff with a little more substance as he gets used to eating breakfast. It will take quite some time, though.

I really like the sausage and cheese biscuit idea... bacon would be good too! You could slice that baby in half and put some scrambled eggs in there and have yourself a feast!

Oh those are some great ideas!

Doug hates eating breakfast. He says it makes him feel gross the rest of the day, but I am a breakfast person and so is Nora. Thanks for some great ideas! I think I will make homemade poptarts for our trip home! :D

My kids love sausage and cheese biscuits. I just cook up some loose sausage and mix it with some grated cheddar into dry biscuit mix (Bisquick, or MJF Budget Mix), then make the biscuits up as usual. Great hot or cold and freeze well too!

My mother-in-law eats grilled jam sandwiches in place of pop-tarts to save money. You can experiment with different breads/jams to find the most pleasing combination.

I'm partial to sourdough bread with cream cheese and raspberry jam.

Yeah...sorry. I wish I could help!!! Mine eats a "snack bag" of cheetos, or a little sleeve of peanuts. It's the only meal in the day that I can't control the junk he eats!!!!

I like the idea of your own "pasties" like the miners in England used to take. Sounds yummy to me!

oooh ya! Homemade poptarts are so tasty. You can use real mashed fruit with some honey if you don't want all the sugary jam. So many choices...

if he insists on poptarts, you can make them homemade with pie crust, a little egg wash, and jam, pb, etc.

yum! I'm hungry...
YOu can also make homemade granola bars. Those are super good for a guy who likes carbs in the morning...but the protein is probably better. At least there is a couple of choices.

DH loves breakfast burritos of scrambled eggs and bacon. I cook the eggs without stirring so I have a solid slab of egg and I leave the bacon strips unbroken. Less messy that way. I've also made turnovers with whatever filling I have at the time. He also likes biscuit sandwiches with eggs and a sausage patty or toasted bagel sandwiches with cream cheese and ham.

Breakfast burritos! Yum.
Scrambled eggs and cheese are the quickest, although you can certainly spruce that up w/ tobasco, cilantro, peppers, sausage, or whatever.

You can even make them the night before and put them in a microwave-safe container or wrap and he can substitute that for poptarts. Just heat up and go...

It's really inexpensive for us because we always have fresh eggs in abundance from the chickens that we free-range. Now is a good time to buy extra from locals if you don't have your own hens.
