I love them for storing dry goods too, plus they make nice jar gifts and neat candles too.

Granniehelga, I use my half-gallon canning jars to store anything that will fit in them. From dry goods, cereal, chips, cookies, etc. They are also great for storing leftovers. Or leftovers for the freezer. Then I use my Food Saver to suck all the air out. I can't believe how that extends the shelf life of EVERYTHING. And it's so simple to keep resealing the jars after each use. BB

The problem with using them for canning is heating the food in the center of the jar to the correct temperature without over processing the food on the outside of the jar.

That is what I use mine for too. My grandma used hers for dill pickles..back then she didn't water bath them.

Half gallons are no longer considered acceptable for anything that must be pressure canned. I use mine to store dry goods.
