I was so excited to see organic milk in our grocery store today. They carry alot of organic items. But, then I went to reach for it and it was $5.99 a gallon. I was so disappointed, that is about $3.50 more than I pay for the regular fat free milk. I do so hope one day the prices will come down on organic food a bit.

Costco has a good price on organic milk but you have to buy 3 1/2 gallons at a time. No big deal if you have kids though.

I drink organic milk and my hubby drinks soy milk. We are both happy!

Alee, that is one thing I don't like about farmers selling their eggs...they under sell them! I charge $5 per dozen and the people that buy are happy to pay. You have to consider everything that goes into getting those eggs...the price is not only fiar but worth it.
we dont buy organic milk because I think the commercial brands are a rip off and I am a purist when it comes to organic. We buy local hormone free non homogenized milk from a nearby dairy that keeps the calves with the mothers, and we only buy 1/2 gallon at a time because we mostly drink soy milk and hemp milk.

A good way to find locally produced food is www.localharvest.org
They have clickable maps and zip-code searches and you can look for co-ops (if you're stuck in the city like me), CSA's, but also lots of farms that sell local eggs, dairy and meat.
I don't know how so many people have gotten onto it, but was amazed by how many local farms were listed that I could just go buy some eggs direct from the source. I live in an urban county, so I was surprised at how close locally raised food could be. DH and I are even considering eating chicken again if we can go meet the cluckers and see how they're treated. We've been veggies for about 8 years, but it's not the death that bugs us as much as how the critters are treated while they're alive. |

We have organic milk at most all of the grocery stores here, and it is 3.69 for a 1/2 gallon (sometimes on sale for 2 for 6.00). I buy it for the grandgirls and for my DH cereal. The 2% is so good, it tastes like whole milk. I love that it tastes so much better. Lucky, though, because I can make a 1/2 gallon last almost a week. That is the difference in not having lots of folks still living under our roof.

Kay- Take a drive on the country roads- you might just find a sign for eggs for sale. That is what I always try to do and have had good luck finding eggs from free range flocks for only about $1.50 a dozen.

Organic milk here is about $5.50 a gallon. Since I'm the only one in the house that drinks milk, and the little I use for cooking, I buy a half gallon. It's still about $3.50 but worth every penny. I really am trying to go to as many organic things as I can. Since we're cutting out pop and junk food that leaves extra money to spend on organic items. I can't wait for summer and the Farmer's Market to get produce. Now if I could just find a good source for meat without having to buy a whole cow I'd be happy. Has anyone noticed how expensive eggs have gotten? They are $3.50 a dozen for the yucky white store eggs. I need to find a local source for that too.

Sherri, Amen! Ha! Well, I drink soy milk, which is probably no less expensive. Food is sure getting expensive! Boy, I'd skip the whole thing but then there's that whole starvation and dying to worry about...hmmm....

Organic milk here is at least a 15 minute drive, and it's $8 a gallon. I just can't afford that with teenagers! Regular milk is now $5.59 a gallon in my town. Seems like all the milk prices have recently jumped.

Mary Jane- Do you have a local food co-op? Sometimes their prices are a little cheaper. But I think I pay $6.30 a gallon for Nora's whole organic milk. It certainly costs a bit more, but I feel better about giving it to her.
If you can't afford organic milk, please at least try to get the milk from cows not treated with RSBT a growth hormone.
