Posted - Aug 31 2005 : 7:23:20 PM Julia, I've never had a special "yogurt maker". I've always used an electric warming tray, put the yogurt mixture in the bowls, covered it with a linen dishtowel, and let it set there overnight. It is soooo simple to do. So why haven't I made any in such a looong time? hehehe Phyllis |

Posted - Aug 31 2005 : 3:56:54 PM Those Stoneyfield recipes are really good...I printed out several with the idea that I might make them some day. I ended up buying a tub of yogurt and making all 5 recipes one weekend, I couldn't stop myself!! They were so tasty and I felt very healthy. |

Posted - Aug 31 2005 : 3:42:34 PM Where can you buy yogurt makers? Can you just go to any dept. store? I had one many years ago and don't know where I got it. Are they expensive? I've always found the consistency to be very soupy. Is that how homemade yogurt usually turns out? So many questions... Jan |

Posted - Aug 31 2005 : 04:21:07 AM We used to make our own yogurt, when we had our Jersey cow. In order to get textures like you're accustomed to, you'll probably have to add powdered milk. Jerseys have the highest milk solid content of any breed, but it still wasn't as dense (I don't know how to describ it!) without additional milk solids. Otherwise, it has a watery look and taste.
I'd strongly recommend that you get your powdered milk at the health food store, though. Carnation has a bunch of crap in it to make it dissolve faster, and it makes the yogurt taste funky. Also, make sure your health food store has a strong turnover. Old milk powder can go rancid, and is another funky flavor experience.
We always loved using Stoneyfield for our starter. It was great stuff! Now if I want Stoneyfield, I have to drive almost an hour. So I buy Dannon plain in the quart tubs. |
