Does anybody use a kitchenaid mixer with the attachment for making applesauce? I have a Vittorio strainer that I have used for years and was thinking about getting the att. for my kitchenaid instead. Any thoughts? |

My dh bought me my Kitchenaid end of last year and I love it. We could not afford all the cool attachments at that time. I want to start buying meat in bulk and trying to save money where I can. I have used my kitchenaid weekly and during the holidays it was abused daily.
Can anyone suggest a must buy attachement for the kitchenaid?
My came with a dough hook and the two mixer paddles. |

I have seen that one too and wondered. I have used a similar machine that is a hand cranking one and love it so maybe this new one would be good.

I was in Williams Sonoma over the Christmas holidays, and see they have a new pasta attachment that rolls rather than extrudes. Has anybody tried this yet?
We don't really do much pasta, but sometimes it'd be fun. We had the plates for the extruded type, and we didn't really care much for them. |

I have the grain grinder attachment and use it on occasion when I want to make some different kinds of bread. I have ground kamut, quinoa, spelt, rye, oats, hard wheat, etc. with it and it makes a very usuable finely ground flour. Just remember to sift it lots or your bread will be VERY heavy! (learned this the hard way) It will grind grain in pretty much any manner you wish, from course to fine. It will also grind coffee beans.
There are two "howevers" tho...firstly, make sure you can get replacement grinders without having to purchase the entire unit. Last time I cleaned mine I noticed that they are starting to wear a little. Not alot, but for the amount I have used it, I wouldn't have expected to see any wear yet.
Lastly, the grinder will not grind oily seeds or grains like sunflower seeds, flax or millet. Just messes up the whole thing.

I have three attachments...the grater (which I used to use and now seldome use), the grinder (used it today to grind the zucchini, peppers and onions for relish), and the strainer which I LOVE! I use it to juice berries when I make jelly (very fast), and to make applesauce. The three attachments came as a set. If I was buying them alone, I'd skip the grater.
Does anybody have the grain grinding attachment? How is the quality of the grind??? Please let me know. It would be about half the cost of buying a wheat grinder and a lot less to store. On the other hand, if it isn't worth it...

I feel the same way about automatic graters and shredders usually..never like them and don't end up keeping them. I use a hand grater and it has always got me by fine..but I am sure interested in the strainer..hope it is good. I do love the meat grinder!!! REally a useful thing!!

Arlene, I almost never use my shredders or grater attachments. I am not impressed by them either but I do love the meat grinder. Make my own summer sausage and also use it for a great cranberry/orange sauce.

I found the attachments online, the strainer is about $40.00 because you already have the grinder. I bought mine at a Kitchen store in the outlet mall.(The ONLY place that had it) So far I have only tried the grater on my zucchini, and I am not impressed so far. I will try the strainer today and let you know if I like it.

I have the meat grinder and the food mill attatchments. Use the meat grinder a lot around christmas time but did not know about the strainer either. I use a Folley food mill, messy. Can I find this on line?

The pasta plates are like that too...I bought them years ago...but you needed the meat grinder atttachment to use that attachment too. I will have to look into getting the strainer thing too. It would be nice to have THAT one too. I sure love my kitchen aid..have had it since 1987 and use it most days for something.

I bought the attachment set today, boy, $129.00 expensive, Jenny if you already have the meat grinder the strainer isn't that bad, 42.00, it attaches to grinder, hehe attachment for the attachment! I 'll keep you posted on how i like it and if it is worth the price. It comes with the strainer, grinder and slicer, grater.

I have that attachment, and used to use it all the time to make applesauce, apple butter, pumpkin puree, etc. It's extremely fast and easy. Because of the length of the screen relative to the spigot that spits out the waste, you need a narrow, deep bowl to collect your sauce. You may need a catch bowl for the sauce, and a separate, larger pan or bowl to dump into. And you need a separate bowl to catch the waste.
The waste is almost squeezed dry; it's astonishing how well this works. Much better than the hand crank type strainers. |

I don't have that attachment either..I use my kitchen aid all the time and use the meat grinder attachment alot..I love that. I use a vitorio strainer too.

They make something like that? Wow I didn't know that. I have a Kitchenaid that I use A LOT and have a couple attachments but not that one, sorry. I just recently found out they have an icecream maker attachment. |
