Some of you may have read that my husband is having some problems with acidity and gets sick often...we've narrowed it down to tomatoes...

He really thinks soup makes him feel better, and likes that it's gentle on his stomach, but I'm a bit "chickened" out. Do you have a soup that you love? I think he could probably do a tomato paste or a little tomato sauce....

Jonni, this recipe represents how far the pendulum can swing in the opposite direction...no "living" food here, but oh, can't even begin to describe how much DH & I LOVE this rich comfort food/soup!

Hearty Wild Rice Cheese Soup

1 C wild rice (or 2 C frozen)
(I use a box of Uncle Ben's Original because the seasonings just totally enhance the soup)
1 lg onion, chopped fine
1/2 lb bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 cans cream of potato soup
1 qt 1/2 & 1/2
1 lb Velveeta cheese, cut into cubes

Cook rice as directed or thaw frozen rice. (I usually cook bacon, then the onion, then use the recipe directions) In a large saucepan, combine all ingredients and cook over low heat, stirring often, until dish is hot and cheese is completely melted. Serve with crusty bread and salad. Serves 12
Nutrition value per serving: 399 cal, 18.5 g protein, 17 g carbo, 27 g fat, 75 mg chole., 1231 mg sodium, 1 g dietary fiber

He may also enjoy bean soups because they tend to be heartier than brothy soups. When I get home I'll send my Tuscan Bean and Bread recipe.

I have the same problem with tomatoes. Sometimes it's just aweful.

Thank you girls! I'm printing every one off--I'm going to the market this weekend, so it will be nice to have some recipes handy.

I posted a yummy potato soup that we think is very good. I made it again tonight but didn't put in any ham---just as good--I put so little in before you couldn't even tell the diff. I'll go find it.. MB

This is a variation on my husband's old family recipe for what they call "bread soup." There's no bread in it, actually, but a few generations back they used to thicken it with breadcrumbs. I actually "de-modernized" this soup, as husband's aunt, who taught me how to make it, made it with powdered mushroom soup mix (yecch). I love this, because I missed real split pea soup since I started keeping kosher and couldn't eat ham, and this hits the spot perfectly.

1/2 bag green split peas
1/2 bag yellow split peas
1 cup white beans
1/2 cup barley
3 or more cups water
3 cups chicken broth
About 4 carrots, cut into 2-inch pieces
About 3 stalks celery, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 onion, diced
1/2 lb mushrooms, sliced
1-2 lbs stew beef, cut in chunks
2 bay leaves
salt
pepper (be generous)

Put all ingredients in pot. Bring to boil. Lower to simmer. Cook for a long time (A couple of hours at least). If it gets too thick, add water.

Yep, I didn't put tater tots in mine at all. I just put some bacon bits in it...didn't use all that ham.

No, Amie, he hasn't, but that's a good idea. I was going to send him to the doctor here, shortly (if he'll go)...Very interesting that tomatoes are a cause of your husband's issues, too. It's crappy, cause I LOVE them, and seem to crave them in everything I eat!!!

Lentils ARE good--they'll at least provide some protein also. Justin is so small anyway (he's 5 '11" and weighs 130lbs.), and I just have a fear of him losing weight like he used to. He hasn't eaten in few days except for soup. Seems like he's afraid to.

Lentil soup is good too. I like to add a couple of potatoes, a couple of carrots, and lots of celery. You can flavor it a whole bunch of different ways. Sometimes I use mustard powder. Other times coriander. Other times ketchup and soy sauce. My husband has problems with tomatoes too, just the past few years since he had his gall bladder removed. It's odd because nobody warned him to watch out for tomatoes, and you would never think the two were connected. Has Justin had his gall bladder checked out?
