Well, some years work out better than others. Every year we pick a theme for Christmas. Scotland won and we lost, lol! I made "Scotch Broth". Basically, it's more like beef vegetable soup but with turnips, carrots, leeks, cabbage and barley. The cabbage never made it into the soup, because by that stage of the game we were all nauseous from the most disgusting smell ever! It tasted better than it smelled but that is not saying much! It had to go down the drain. We had the kitchen windows open, the fans on and every candle we own lit to get rid of the stench. We ended up eating cookies and goodies for the rest of the evening, down in the family room, far, far away from the kitchen. Other than that, we had a very good Christmas and hope you all did to. Happy New Year!

I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by. ~anon

I am sorry, for your dinner lost. I am Irish, German, Scottish, English, Am. Indian. I learn as a little girl to watch my grandparents, if they ate it, I could with a couple exceptions. Plus I would only take teaspoonful and went back if it was good.

Actually, I had Scotch Broth in Scotland and I was very good. You should be grateful you didn't have Haggis. I've had that three times and it's never been good. Never! Now I know why they drink Scotch. It's to wash down the haggis. Gotta have something to get rid of that taste.

UH ok Jonni..The red sauce explains it all.
I was thinking more of just goetta with plain pasta & maybe a little garlic. Tell Jus to try it that way & you guys let me know TEE HEE

PS My Grandpa used to make goetta & slice it real thin & it was ultra spicy. YUM!

Spagoetta! LOL! We call that mixture "scrapple", also eat it for breakfast with syrup. But with spaghetti? Never would have thought of it myself, but thanks for the forewarning!

Oh, Lisa,I love goetta, too! And I love the Anchor--great "late night" place!!!! I especially love goetta on top of waffles with syrup!

**for those who aren't familiar, goetta is a mixture of pork , beef and pin (steel cut) oats and some spices and it is fried as a breakfast meat**

But, Lord this was awful....I mean it. I'm always supportive of him cooking (believe me!!!) but on one particular evening, I was feeling kindof stressed from work and I'd normally go to the store right after but didn't--so there wasn't much to choose from at home. He was trying to be soooo helpful, and one of his "make do" meals is spaghetti and garlic bread, so that's what he elected to make. I decided to take a long bath, and I guess, while I was in the tub, he found that we didn't have any ground beef or turkey, or anything resembling meat other than....goetta.
So, I'm in the tub listening to him banging away in the kitchen when I smell the worlds most AWFUL smell. Seriously, it smelled like something had died in the pan. I got concerned, finished up my bath and came into the kitchen to see what was "up"....There he was, totally determined look on his face, stirring red sauce. He explained that we didn't have any meat, so he used goetta (wasn't I proud of his improvisation) and when I started to crinkle up my nose and protest, he got REALLY offended and said, "WE'RE EATING THIS. I MADE IT and WE'RE EATING THIS." I could hardly get over the stench, and when we sat down to eat, he took the first bite, gagged, almost spit it out on his plate and with a hand making the signal for "stop" he muttered..."we will NEVER speak of this again." and put both plates-full in the garbage. We laugh now, and Spagoetta has become the household word for "crap" or "bad"...If it still sounds good to ya, lemme know, because I bet he can replicate it!!!!

LOL I can't stand the smell of cabbage cooking..it is stinky LOL but actually tastes alright after it is cooked..LOL but while it is cooking oh gracious PU. LOL

I LOVE goetta!! What did he do? Tell Jus I'll eat anything with goetta. Do you ever go to the Anchor in Covington right by the Gliers plant? What a crack up. Best to go around 2am to get the full cultural experience

This is cracking me up. I could have maybe shed some light on this, though, having lived in the UK for a bit....there are some things that ONLY Brits, Scots and the Irish like, and for good reason

I'm glad that you were able to make light of it, though, and it will be a good laugh for MANY years to come!!!! It sort of reminds me of my husband's "spagoetta" incident--if you're not of german heritage and from the Ohio river valley, you might not know what goetta is, and in this instance, you'd be really blessed!!!!
