Well many things went wrong today. The skin on the turkey got a little too brown because Nora started crying and I had to take care of her, then the salt pourer broke and put way too much salt into the potatoes, the pumpkin pie which a friend bought and brought was rather runny and seasoned wierd (Nothing like homemade), and Doug burn the crust on my cherry pie-
But you know what? We had fun and enjoyed the food anyway. We joked and laughed and in a wierd way were even more thankful for the food because it wasn't perfect. I am just glad this wasn't the year that I hosted 20 people! LOL

i know this is several days later, but i'm still putting things away! i had 17 over for dinner.....did it all myself (in the past, others would bring over a dish but we always had trouble fitting them in the oven so i figured i'd do it all this year and make everything fit) anyway, the table and house looked beautiful...just like martha stewart! really!....the food came out great! but i started running out of space in the kitchen so i started just putting the pans (like the one the turkey was cooked in) out on the porch. we all sat down, said a blessing, started to eat and you could hear all this commotion out side......dogs and cats growling!! just as dick was gonna get up take care of that, sandy was passing the delicious homemade cheese and herb muffins that i made (from southern living mag), in the bread basket with the beautiful cloth napkin and it caught fire from the candlesticks......grew into a rather large flame!!.....herman threw some water at it and sandy picked it up and joined dick outside to douse the fire and get rid of the neighborhood pets...... i was so tired from working so hard for the past two weeks i just sat there stunned; like it was the most normal dinner i ever had. sandy and dick came back in and nobody said a word. we did have a great time, but i was glad when everyone finally left! |

I'm glad to hear that mini-disasters aside, you had a great Thanksgiving. While the food is certainly not UNimportant, I'm glad you got to enjoy the MOST important part of Thanksgiving, the friendship & fellowship.
My worst disaster was that instead of the turkey (a big ol' 23 pounder that shouldn't have taken much more than 5 hours to cook) being done at 2:30 (I put it in the oven at 8:30), it took till 3:30 to get done. So, 7 hours, instead of 5. *shaking head* Oh well. Everything tasted fabulous, we just ate it all a little later than planned. |

My squash and turkey were underdone and had to be put in the oven. My potatoes were overdone. Oh, well. Better luck next time. |

We had a very small group this thanksgiving. Just me DH and only 3 of my sons. I always make extra as the guys almost always bring "spares" But this year it was just us. I'm not sure what got into me as I said I would do the whole thing by myself. Usually the guys each pick something to make and they either cook it and bring it or I buy it and they cook it at my house. I thought I'd be mother earth and do it alone. Silly me. Cooking is not my favorite and I was really tired by time to eat. It was all good though and we had tons of leftovers.
Today the guys came by to help DH dig up the front yard. There is a leak somewhere between the street and the house. We have not had any running water all day,but we had plenty of leftovers for lunch and supper to feed my hungry helpers. It's been fun to have them here 2 days in a row! Tomorrow we will go to number 2 son's house as he is having a cookout for the GA vs. GA tech game. So we will eat together again. It's turning out to be a very happy and relaxed holiday weekend.

Alee you are so ADORABLE! What I loved about your thanksgiving was just how very real it all was! Honestly, the imagery we have pressuring us to make he holiday a certain way is fictious advertising...what you experienced was the real deal...cooking, kids, neediness, slightly burnt food, yumminess and everyone having a ball just being together and being! I love it.
We had a great day. We cooked up one of our chickens, some potatoes and homemade applesauce..everything grown right here by yours truly. It was so mellow. My older son didn't (6 years) didn't join us for dinner at all. He wasn't hungry and was busy playing with race cars. My daughters (4 and almost 1) hovered around my husbands' plate and ate his food. They refused to have a plate of their own. Dada's food always tastes so much better! It was great!

Well, for us it went like this:
We started out eating brunch, and at 11;30 am I blew a fuse while having my oven on, the microwave going, and the toaster oven and coffee maker both working. Hubby got it going again quickly.
Then, during the roasting of the turkey, (this year I used a disposable turkey pan), it sprang a leak and dripped all over the stove and the kitchen filled with smoke.
Little Hannah got into a messy diaper during nap and we found a treat when we went to get her in her baby bed. Her daddy actually found it....he stayed amazingly calm.
One of the kids fell part way down the steps, but thankfully was not hurt. Just lots of crying and we all had to comfort her, after we all came running at the big thump.
Like everyone else, though, the food turned out good, and it was great to spend a day together. We sat around the table and expressed what we were thankful for, and no one even thought about the stuff that had happened all day!

I bet the whole thing tasted just that much better because you took time to love Nora...honestly. You are a great mama and I'm glad that you had fun and could laugh about it. As my sweetheart reminded me last night when my galette started burning "We are here to be Thankful and enjoy our selves, not compete with Martha Stewart" heehee...I bet M burns/over salts/under cooks her goodies sometimes too

Alee, that was funny, it reminded me of an I love Lucy episode! it is the truth though, it will stick out in your mind forever,and will always make you laugh! Nora will enjoy being the focus of the story as she gets older.

Alee, you may just look back on this past Thanksgiving as one of your best! The most important part of the holiday is getting together with those you are thankful to have in your life! Nora won't be a baby forever & I'm sure she'll be reminded of her first Thanksgiving, when the turkey got overcooked thanks to her. You get to add this holiday story to your family gatherings!

It's never an auspicious sign when you look out and see 100 or so sheep and goats heading for the horizon LOL...after that my sweetie didn't feel very good, so we got off to a really late start and didn't get supper until 8ish. I really did good, didn't catch anything on fire or under cook anything or make anything truly alien and inedible. I confess that the stuffing was yummmy, I ate too much and need a nap

I too have sick kids (two of them) with 102 fevers, so we missed out on the big party. Oh well, we had all the fixings at home, luckily, even if it was take-out :) Except the cherry pie, which I was supposed to bring - hope they didn't miss it too much!

Oh Alee, I am so sorry about all your little disturbances...but is sounds like you really kept up with the essence of the season. This Thanksgiving was our 3rd Thanksgiving without my DH and we were blessed by his family. I hosted 7 of them at my house because I wanted to be around his family..it makes me feel closer to him, and later his brother and family came to visit...it was so perfect!!! The food I cooked was good, a bit bland, but everyone ate it and seemed happy...as I look back over the day, I am glad the kids and I made it through...and his family did that...that was the best gift they could have given us! i still have a daughter with 102 temp so I am grateful i am with her that is all that mattered today. even if I saw no other family and didn't eat special food i got to snuggle with her

Surprisingly enough we had no disasters,in the kitchen or otherwise. Everyone got along and we three women(myself and two daughters) worked together and put dinner on the table. After dishes were done a few took naps and then we all watched a movie and enjoyed the grandkids. It is quiet now.

I burned my sweet potatoes but it actually tasted pretty good so I just told my husband they were "carmalized" and he ate them up! The dog is licking all the burnt stuff off the bottom of the pan right now.
I did that with the salt once and have since learned to pour the salt into my hand first!
