This is the fourth year I've done Thanksgiving, and I always post my menu when I figure it all out. Here's what I'm planning this year (a few variations from previous years. Everything is homemade)

Turkey and Stuffing: I buy a fresh kosher turkey (not frozen) and make challah sage stuffing according to the family recipe.

Apple Squash Casserole: My husband's family's recipe. I added raisins as a variation. I always put it in too soon and end up burning it. I'm going to be super careful this year.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce with Orange Segments: easier than it sounds

Braised Brussels Sprouts with onions and herbs: This is a new one for me this year, but I haven't done any special veggie sides before, usually just steamed asparagus or brussels sprouts.

Cherry-coconut chillover: With cherry-pomegranate juice, coconut milk, jarred sour cherries and shaved fresh coconut

(maybe) Potato dish TBA, possibly oven roasted purple or multicolor potatoes (if I have a lot of people coming...so far I've got only 5 definite yes replies including the two of us, plus the baby. I might be expecting as many as 11 adults at dinner, plus baby)

Salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette

Store-bought bakery french bread warmed in the oven with roasted garlic, olive oil and herbs

Sweet potato pie with meringue topping

Kentucky Derby pie (pecan pie with chocolate chips, Frannie's recipe. Thanks, Frannie!)

(if I get a huge crowd) Coffee Spice Cake

no offense Nima but I think I would have to rebel too! ;)
I am from the north and my nubby is from the south so we have a very large conglomeration of both our family traditions.
Turkey - I am making two. One to cook and freeze as leftovers and one to eat.
Stuffing - my grandma recipe.
Dressing - richies moms recipe
corn souffle
sweet potatoes
mashed potatoes
peas
cranberry sauce
hot rolls
cornichions
hot rolls
crescent rolls
applebutter pumpkin pie
chocolate chess pie

Mmmmm I can't wait!

Evanston farmer's market! I also shop at True Nature Foods on Broadway (independently owned, sourced locally). I fill in the gaps with Local Harvest, Eat Wild, etc.

And all my good recipes are listed on my blog! :-)

All of it sounds great. I just looked online and found out that the farmer's market where I would get the multicolor potatoes is open next Wednesday, so I don't have to worry about buying them ahead of time. Whew.

We always have our traditional Southern type Thanksgiving. Yummm!!
We loosen the skin on the breast and inject a seasoned broth( chicken stock, garlic, sage, s&p, evoo) with a turkey baster in that area and let it marinate for two days. This makes the turkey very moist.

Slow roasted turkey

pan gravy

Southern sage cornbread stuffing (my Mom's recipe)

garlic mashed potatoes w/sour cream and butter

baked yams with marshmallows

cranberries

green beans with bacon bits and small potatoes

my Grandmas recipe for dinner rolls

deviled eggs

cold veggie tray

Desserts:

punkin pie

pecan pie

homemade carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

I think that's it. Now I'm hungry! Lu

so far, there will be a baked brie in phyllo pastry and a light pumpkin-ginger bisque as a starter. The man wants a bread stuffing and I was leaning towards wild rice...he'll win though =)
I am thinking of the organic concentrated orange juice glaze for the bird. We are still debating the stuffing. I will make pan gravy and there will be snap peas and pearl onions in butter. To finish this off I am making a rustic cran-apple tart with a dollop of creme. We are trying to make lighter versions as both of us have to watch our carbs

Wishing you joy in small things and peace in your heart

Thank you all for the mouth watering menus. This year we're going to friends so I'll do a turkey sometime later in the weekend for our family.
Here's what I'm thinking of making:
Roasted onion, yam, kale salad
Cranberry Jello (walnuts, pineapple, hm whole cranberry sauce)
Cranberry Relish & Sauce
Sweet Potato Casserole (this year made with blue hubbard squash)
Butterflake Rolls
Assorted Pickles & Jams from the pantry

Blessings,

Yum, everyone! I'll come to your houses. :)

Actually, my whole family comes here and I will be cooking:
For breakfast-
fried dough with molasses or maple syrup
sausage and bacon
orange juice
a fruit bowl (for the something healthy)HA!

In between-
Dips and chips
snacky veggies and dips
lots of water

For dinner-
A turkey stuffed with lemons and rosemary
Dressing, cooked out of the bird so it gets that nice crispy top
Scallop casserole- a family fave
Glazed carrots
green bean casserole
mashed potatoes- lots!
onion pie
corn pudding
gravy, of course.

For dessert-
pumpkin pie
apple pie
gateau au chocolat
coconut cake

Sweets overload-Yikes!!

Ah, I love Thanksgiving. :)

How convenient, AMANDA'S!!! I didn't catch that you both were, but I was referring to you, but the other Amanda beat my post to the punch...now after reading both menu's, I think I will stop at BOTH Amanda's. Heck, Chi-town is only 5 hours from me. I can eat here around 12:00 and be there at dinner time!

This may be the last year I do Thanksgiving here, with next year being at the inlaws. (I've done it for 8 of the last 10 years, as of this year.) We thought we'd be at the inlaws this year as well, but my dad didn't retire & leave state earlier this year as we'd thought LAST Nov.

My menu includes:

Turkey (a big ol' 23 pounder) rubbed with olive oil & salt, pepper & italian seasoning mix
Mashed potatoes (homemade with half & half & real butter and unpeeled baby-red potatoes, may mash in a couple of whole cloves of garlic as well)
canned whole-berry cranberry jelly
jarred heinz turkey gravy (because this is the ONLY kind of gravy DH will eat)
fresh asparagus simmered just till crisp-tender & slathered with butter.
store-bought multi-grain rolls (with everything else I'm making, I'm NOT worrying about the rolls not turning out)
yams (going to mash them with orange juice this year & top with marshmallows & chopped pecans & brown sugar)

a tray of cornichons, olives, beets & cheese & cold-cut meat

Dad's bringing dessert this year, and is leaning towards a pumpkin cheesecake

MIL's bringing her crab-ball & crackers.

So, that's our menu.

Wow, kitchensqueen, you and I have got to get together sometime and swap recipes. I notice you're really into heirloom varieties of meat and produce. Where do you buy them? I find a lot of great stuff at Lincolnwood produce. My favorite fruit store, Harvestime, is starting to get in on the action, too. Send me an e-mail.

Jonni, which Amanda were you referring to? We're both Amanda, and conveniently located in the same town, too!

I'm coming to Amanda's house!!!

Since I never just cook on my own, and we are going to MIL's house this year, I am in charge of the green beans, with onions (marinated overnight with 1 lb of bacon, drippings, vinegar and brown sugar, then baked, and an appetizer. I'm actually glad, because last year I made the whole dinner, and I'm happy to have a break, and be a "piece" of the puzzle. :)

I always go for an ultra-traditional Thanksgiving. I use basically this menu every year, with small variations:

- Honey Riesling Bourbon Red Turkey (from Caveny Farm)

- Honey Ham with Cloves (I’m trying to locate a locally-raised Berkshire ham)

- Garlic Mashed Kennebec Potatoes with Truffle Oil

- Wilted Kale with Shallots and Balsamic Drizzle

- Fire-Roasted Yams

- Illinois Chestnut Stuffing

- Egg Noodles in Home-Made Chicken Stock

- Heirloom Kubota Pumpkin Pie (from Henry’s Farm)

- Cranberry Sauce

- Ligonberry Preserves

- Norwegian Almond Cake
