I recently moved from the Shipshewana Indiana area,and I used to buy these great rhubarb custard pies from Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury Indiana.Well I miss those pies!!!Anyone have a great Rhubarb custard pie recipe?And most of all anyone in the Northwestern Indiana area know of a great pie place thats down home like Essenhaus?
Also, I'm also looking for cute cute shopping village areas like Shipshewana?Any help would be much appreciated!

Ah yes, Bronners! You may well imagine that for a goth rock teenage girl, it might be tedious--Holland was where my first suitemate was born and raised...she didn't believe in dance--I think it was a religious thing-- (I was a dance major), and she transferred to a new suite!
Now, I think I could handle Bronners--well, maybe not all day, but some of the day! The Hummel room kindof creeped me out, though :)

I'm misleading you, Kathy. I meant to say that there is not a big Christmas shop, per se, in Holland. But it's kinda my home town (we grew up out in the country), so I love it for many reasons. And they have lots of snow and the sidewalks are heated so that all the snow melts away! Oh, and there's a great candy store downtown, The Peanut Store, where you can get great imported Dutch candy, especially Wilhelmina mints. Oh, yes, I love it for so many reasons!
Very off topic from the Rhubarb pie! My mom used to make a rhubarb pie with a meringue top. Yum.

The whole state must be a "Christmas Wonderland"!!
I have been to the wooden shoe factory and tulip bulb outlet in Holland, but never to the Christmas ****** stuff.

No, no Christmas s*** in Holland. There is a wooden shoe factory, lots of tulips of course, and a great beach! I've never been to Frankenmuth -- other side of the state.

Jonni, are you thinking of Holland, or of Frankenmuth, Michigan? That's where "Bronner's Christmas Wonderland" is. A fun place if you're shopping for ornaments, but I can imagine it's pretty tedious for most teenagers! My mom and I go to Frankenmuth about once a year to shop. They have very cute, unique shops and great German food!!

Holland, Michigan, I presume? The place witht the Christmas h*** from my teenage years?? We always had to stop there on the way to back to Interlochen, taking me to school.
If I'd known there was pie, it might have saved my family a LOT of abuse!

Yes, Froelich's is great! If you go farther north, check out Crane's Apple Orchard and Pie shop near Fennville. They have 'outlets' for their pies in Holland, too. Great Pies! And great cider, etc.

I plan on taking a trip there on Halloween.YAY!Now if I only had a few thousand to buy stuff haha.

Well my goodness Farah, I say just hop in the car & head to Das Essenhaus! My husband drives through there all the time & brings us butterscotch pie from their bakery. I think you should head out on a nice fall day...it's worth the trip! C'mon you know you want to!

Grandma Thomas' Rhubarb Custard Lemon Pie
3 cups cut rhubarb 1 1/2 cup sugar
grated rind & juice of 1 large lemon dash salt
3 tablespoons cornstarch 3 beaten eggs
Mix all in in bowl. Put into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 375' for 45 minutes. Top with your favorite meringue or whipped cream. Yum!!

Ok, I must admit I'm a bit hesitant to try this pie--Rhubarb scares me a little, but I am so glad the thread turned into a lovely little travel guide for northern Indiana and Michigan! I have learned SOOO much from you girls about nifty places to go in the next few weeks before the holiday--my mom and I have decided not to buy much this year (for Christmas), but go places we think sound fun.
Lots on my list, now, thanks to you girls!!!!

Froelich's is a great little coffee shop/deli/kitchen-y gift shop in Three Rivers. They have a booth at that Chesterton Farmers Market on Saturdays too! Yummy relishes, apple butter, pickles, jellies, etc., etc., etc!

Sure bring the recipe on! I didn't know three oaks was becoming the place to go.My Grandfather Kay,grew up there,and he still talks fondly of his old small town.
I know its not really rhubarb season,but my cravings haven't a clue.Well next year I can harvest my own rhubarb.Hopefully I'll learn how to make THE rhubarb custard pie.
By the way,anyone have a good pie crust recipe???

This is the wrong time of year for this delicious discussion & I don't have any rhubarb in the freezer. I have a recipe from my Great Grandma for a Rhubard Lemon Custard pie. Most delicious thing. Let me know if you want the recipe.

Oh, I drive right past Chesterton when I go up to Michigan to see family! Will have to check out the downtown area sometime. I love New Buffalo area, too, and Three Oaks is becoming THE place to be -- great shops, great theatre. . . Love that whole area!

It is a small world indeed.I'm right off of 30 myself.
I got a little grouchy about Valpo when I moved here,with not finding my old town favorites.I went to the popcorn festival,to only find that there wasn't any darn popcorn left!My daughter wasn't very happy LOL!Thanks everyone for the info,I will definately use it all. |

I work in Valparaiso, in fact that's where I am right now--small, small world!
Chesterton has a cute downtown, but I haven't done much actual shopping there. They're kind of artsy. If you go on Saturday they have an AWESOME farmers' market in Chesterton--food, crafts, & lots of goodies. It's right downtown just west of the "square". If you happen to be a weaver, the weaver's guild has their monthly meeting in Chesterton at the Library Annex this Saturday morning too. I'm going if my husband is out of town. Chesterton is about 12 miles north of Valparaiso. To get downtown take 49 north out of Valparaiso and go about 12 miles until you get to Indian Boundary Road (lots of fast food-you'll see Wendy's, Taco Bell, etc), turn left and continue till the road "T"s, then turn left and go about a mile, go over the railroad tracks and you'll be there!
If you want to drive a little farther, New Buffalo, MI -- just across the state line has lots of little artsy shops--fairly pricey since it draws a lot of traffic from Chicago, but it's right on Lake Michigan and it's a nice day trip. Take 49 north to 94, then 94 east into Michigan and I think it's exit 1 or 2 right over the line.

I'm located in Valparaiso Indiana.
From what I know,the pie doesn't have a meringue.Its really creamy too,not the usual rhubarb custard pie.ktknits,I'd love to do a road trip sometime!Hey do you know of any cute shopping areas near Valpo,or just in this direction thats even a pinch like Middlebury? |

Marilyn's Bakery - used to be in Valparaiso, but I think she's in Hobart now. Verry good pies! Strongbows in Valparaiso also has an excellent bakery and pies. Where are you in NW Ind? I'll try to think of more places.
Let me know if you ever want to take a road trip to Middlebury. I love that area!
