I made butter cookies today and my house smelled wonderful! Fall must be here if cooking is sounding good in the morning! It was great to warm the morning chill off the house with the smell of sweet, yummy butter cookies!

I don't mind giving up having a great garden this year to have a wonderful first year with Nora :) She is such a doll!
Thanks for the tip about your mulch type! I am going to try lasagna gardening for this winter to help treat some of the known issues with my garden soil- aka- weeds!

Alee - I am sure you will make the most of what you get. Congratulations on your newborn. I'm sure you will be very busy for some time to come. The past two years, for a number of reasons, we had loads of plants and no tomatoes, so I have really enjoyed the abundance of this year's harvest. I have cut my garden down to about 1/3 the size of past years and it was a lot easier to care for. I am canning for two of us now because the children are doing their own. My garden in the past was about 4,000 sq. ft. and had no less that 30 tomato plants. Also, I found that putting shredded copy paper around my plants helped us through the drought. It held what water they were able to get, kept weeds under control, and we had no tomato worms this year. I do not know if the shredded paper was the reason for that, but I will definitely do it again next year. Also, my peppers, eggplant, etc. all did much better with that type of mulch. Good luck on everything you do. |

I live in town and I put in 28 plants, but they got neglected this year and are more leggy than productive so I am not getting nearly the harvest you did! Wow! But seeing as how I have spent over a month away and have a newborn I figure the fact that they are still alive is a pretty good accomplishment! :D

Alee - Like you, I love to can the harvest of my garden. How many plants did you put out? Do you live in the country where you can put out a good garden? Or do you have to plant in small areas. I planted in my flower beds for years. Then we moved to the farm.
My tomatoes are finished for this year and I was able to can 35 pints of cream of tomato soup, 28 pints of tomatoes, 8 quarts of spaghetti sauce, 20 salsa, 12 catsup, and 40 Italian zucchini. I also gave away about 3 bushels, and ate fresh tomatoes almost every meal. All off 12 plants. It has indeed been a very good harvest. I do hope your's does as well. |

I decided to can tomato sauce today. Last time I canned I did spaghetti sauce so I got 5 quarts of sauce. This time I just did the tomatoes and I got two and a half quarts! I am amazed at my garden's abundance. My tomatoes taste so much better than the farmer's market tomatoes! I hope I get to can every weekend for a while! I would love to have some more glistening red jars on my pantry shelf!

I just put a batch of homemade oatmeal cookies in the oven. The aroma is WONDERFUL. DH and our youngest son are out finishing the split rail cedar fence. Roasted Chicken for dinner with fresh corn and then we get the oatmeal cookies....... I LOVE FALL
