We have been in the remodeling process for a couple of months. Today the contractors helped me rip out the false ceiling in the kitchen. Now the ceiling is almost 10 feet high. Yahoo. Everything is covered in a light film of dust. It is dark because we have no lighting in there now, temporarily. But I want to get excited about what to do with the wall space above the cupboards.

What kinds of things have you all done with that "empty" space above your cupboards. One side has a "shelf" the other is just wall because the cupboards are recessed into the wall. What about ideas for ceilings? Light fixtures?

Lord, keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth!

I just sold some old schoolhouse light fixtures at yard sale this spring. My husband's dad salvaged them from the dumpster at the school where he worked in the 60s. Unfortunately, we couldn't think of a way to use them in our house.

I use the tops of my cupboards to store/display the family glass and china that doesn't get used much. If you have a collection of baskets, that would be a good place for those too.

It's kind of hard to say without actually seeing it. But I would consider installing the short cupboards above the ones already there to store the seasonal stuff. The wall above the recessed cabinets could be used for pictures, collectibles and/or stenciled with something really cool.

Ceilings? Well, I have no idea there. All of mine are plain white with a ceiling fan. Except the kitchen; where I really NEED a ceiling fan. But then my low false ceiling will be coming out of my kitchen some day, too and I WILL have a ceiling fan then.

I love the old style of light fixtures. I'm really partial to the pendant types. But that's a matter of taste. Sounds like you'll be doing some fixture shopping soon. How fun!
