I have a Black Walnut tree. My sister has a Black Walnut tree. How do you harvest Black Walnuts and how do you store them? I figure if I do it the squirrels will quit planting them in my garden. those little buggers drive me CRAZY! I have taken to keeping a BB Gun next to the door.

I generally don't use walnuts. The ones at the store don't have alot of flavor. So, I thought these might be more flavorful. I use pecans the most. I only insist on using walnuts in my gramma's banana bread.

You can use them just like you would use nuts in any other recipe.
Nuts have oil and oil spoils so it is a good idea to store them in bags or plastic tubs in the freezer. They can be used right out of the freezer.

You can even use them in pesto instead of pine nuts. I don't think it changes the flavor much, either. In fact, come to think of it, even if you use sage instead of basil it doesn't change much!

squirrel ammo. No! :) What, Aimee, how do you use walnuts? Or pantihose full of walnuts? :) Walnuts in cookies, bread, by the handful, in chicken dishes, ground up as filling, added to casserole toppings for a yummy healthy crunch...

We have a black walnut tree too. I save my panty hose with runs all year long so I can use the legs to fill with the walnuts and hang them in the garage.

Oooh, great information. I have a neighbor with some sort of walnut tree, I'll have to ask. This might just be the key to putting those messy little things to good use. :) Thanks so much!

I have to be quick otherwise the squirrels get them all, you can tell a squirrel is harvesting black walnuts as their fur is really dark under their chin and upper belly! they sure are great harvesters and peelers.

My dad lets them dry out on a hay rake or picinic table, then gets the hulls off. He then spends time in the winter shelling them. We got him a tool out of Lehmans that works great with those hard nuts.

my grandmother always hung them up in net bags from her clothesline (to keep the squirrels from getting into them) for a month or so to let the hulls rot away... Then she maybe cured them for another month, then shelled them by hitting them with a hammer. She worked on those black walnuts all winter long!

Aimee- we have one, too. I pick them up (use gloves because of the walnut oil!!!!). Our coop has a machine that hulls them, but our neighbor across the street just runs over them with his truck!
Some places will give you money for pounds of walnuts.
