I'm thinking of buying one this year just to make it easier on me(it's hard to carry those big old canners full of water and it takes too long to fill them with a pitcher). Also, you wouldn't have to wait as long for the water to come to a boil since you only put a small amount in the pan for steam. So, I'm thinking it could save me effort, time and money (electric bill).

Do you gals think that because steam is so much hotter than boiling water that it could actually replace a pressure cooker? I'm afraid to use my pressure cooker on my glass top stove and generally freeze whatever requires it instead of canning. But I'm running out of room in my freezers.

Like Alee, I'm fairly new to canning as well, but I really like my hot water bath canner. I've gotten it down to a system, and it works--you know what they say, if it ain't broken, don't fix it!

I've looked into pressure canners, but I really didn't have enough of anything this year to can that way. Next year I'll invest in one. For now, my jams and salsas and pickles and apple and pear butter will work in the water bath canner.

It is heavy, but it makes me feel like a pioneer!!!

I have used a steamer canner for over 20 years with no problems, in fact just bought a 2nd on to have 2 going at the same time. Now I'm looking for a2nd American pressure canner.

I use the steamer for pickles, jams & fruit & the pressure canner for the rest. Thanks to my dear friend Gaylyn for introducing them to me hundreds of quarts & pints ago.

I am new to canning- but I liked how the water bath worked so I am sticking with it and wishing for a pressure cooker one of these days!

I was just reading online last night about using steam canners. I was think of buying one. Here is what I got from it. It will not replace a preasure canner. YOu can only use it like you would a water bath canner and then there are some if's about that too. They say, the water doesn't heat the food hot enough to be 100% safe. But I am still wondering about it and would love to hear from others who have one and use it.
