or even more...anyhow quite alot of pears were gathered off of my tree last week by Naomi and myself.
You can see images over on my blog at:
www.gardengoose.blogspot.com
under the post titled "Baby it's Hot outside..."

I also posted a few images of what I have done with at least 6 of those pears thus far. (yeah..it was just a small dent in the pile of pears..but a yummy dent none the less) :0)
A recipe is posted there for anyone interested.I'll be creating more things as I go along making this pile of pears smaller..and will post recipes as I discover new uses for my "peck of pears"

I canned a few pears from our batch...and what I did was simply peel, core and slice, then added as much cinnamon as I liked..oh..we like cinnamon, so I added about 3 tablespoons to about 25 pears in a pot. Then about 1 1/2 cups sugar..or if you use splenda...let cook until softened/tender.
Spoon into sterilized jars and seal. Process in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes.
Great over pancakes or waffles or as a pie filling.
If using as a pie filling, add about 1 teaspoon of tapioca pearls to the prepared pie filling let set 5 minutes, and then bake as you would an apple pie.

Question for all you girls..

Do you think I could substitute pears instead of apples for MaryJanes cooked apple pie filling recipe in her Ideabook? I've asked around my family and no one seems to know anything about pear pie..

I'm making pear butter and canning some in syrup, and probably some jam too, but I'd love to try the pie filling.. will it work? what do you gals think?

Cheers, -meg

Hi,
yes, if it is no trouble. It would be great to have a variety of things to do with all of these pears.
Thanks so very much!

i forgot to say that we dehydrated a bunch of them as pear chips and the kids really loved them. They were a great, tasty, easy to carry snack.

Last year when we had so many pears, the best advice I found (which was SO TRUE) was to pick them kind of green (and hard) and put them in a cardboard box or paper bag for a long time, till they are really ripe (some took a couple of weeks). As long as you don't forget them or let them get rotten or moldy, they ripen so nicely and then are delicious to eat raw or do whatever with.

I have no idea! but..they aren't good for "out of hand" eating..they have to be cooked.

What kind of pears do you have? We have a tree, but they always seem a little "grainy" for eating.

We canned pears in a light syrup last year and they were a delicious treat in the wintertime. None this year thanks to a late freeze this spring.
