I bought a canner today! I figured that would be best since I don't have tongs and it was just as much to buy the canner set as it would be to buy another large stock pot so I could cook tomato sauce and then can it. Pretty cool, eh?

I posted this too, on the "what to do with tomatoes" question..

I was under the impression that you can't or shouldn't water bath can tomatoes, instead, pressure can them. They're kindof pricey, though...and I have a regular water canner.
Any advice?

I've a question. So far all I've canned is jellys, but I have tomatoes ripening quickly. Since tomatoes ripen a few today, a few tomorrow, a few in a couple more days, and so on, How do you all keep your tomatoes until you have enough together to can up a batch? Freeze 'em?

Elizabeth-
I love to can! I did some tomato sauce, strawberry jam, tomato salsa, dill & garlic pickles & some bread & butters this week.. For a 101 I would recommend Ball's canning book. It has a ton of info & I bought mine at a hardware store (True Value) for $4.99
good luck!
my favorite is opening a jar in the middle of winter!!
