Where do you store your potatoes? Does anyone keep them in the vegetable crisper? Is that a good or bad idea?

I haven't had any luck storing mine from the garden. We do have a basement--ok, a cellar--but it gets damp, and there's this humidity thing, and dark thing and I'm worried that I'll end up with mushy potatoes. Also, I hate the basement.

The gal from Sunflower Sundries told me she digs them, brushes the major clumps of mud off, but not all the dirt and literally piles them on the basement floor of her farmhouse cellar. SHE knows what she's doing, I don't She said they keep about 6 months that way.

I have a hard time with storing potaotes too. I have tried a couple winters in a row to buy alot on sale in the fall and then store them in the cellar..guess what..by halfway through winter I have foot long roots on all that are left..jeesh! I usually don't buy more than 20 lb ahead now...those I tend to use fast enough.

I need to get a potato box. My parents had one that had a slanted bottom and air holes in the back. The top was on a hinge so it kept it dark and dry. We keep buying potatoes at the store and they keep getting nasty.

I'm guessing the sand draws away the moisture? Thanks for the tip -- I'll give it a try.

It's not the best idea.
The best way to store potatoes is in a cool, dry, dark place. A wooden box with a little sand in the bottom left in the basement is how folks up here keep them.
