Well, we use it for a cherry pitter. But it once had another purpose in life. Post your guess on my blog!
Hint: I found it my my grandmother-in-law's sewing desk.
(Those of you who are my age (50) or older, and used to use this every day, please don't spoil it for the younger ones... It will be interesting to see if anyone can guess.

Posted - Jul 07 2007 : 3:32:01 PM I guess I just dated myself. I only worn them a couple of times but I do remember them being very weird feeling and that I snapped my thigh once that left a mark for days.
As for using it to pit cherries - I am at a loss. I just got done pitting 6 pounds of sweet dark cherries for the winter and I wished there was an easy way to do that but when I am enjoying my cheery tart with a nice cup of tea as the winter winds blow, it is all worth it.
Great Find!

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 10:34:31 PM Oh my gosh Kathy that's a hoot! I loved the visual!
And yes, how does one pit cherries with this? Inquiring minds want to know. An inquiring mind with 2 cherry trees, who hates pitting cherries. Rhonda

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 2:06:44 PM My G'ma had a zip up girdle with those. She'd lay on the bed and I'd zip up the side for her being sure not to pinch her as I zipped. Then she'd fold up the leg of the girdle, we'd attach the stockings to the stocking holders pictured above (which were attached with a piece of elastic) then she'd fold the leg of the girdle down again over the holders and the tops of the stockings.
G'ma would also put "leg makeup" on before putting on her stockings to hide the varicose veins. Then she always had to put on her "war paint" right before leaving the house!!
Watching and helping her get dressed for an occasion was quite the ordeal when I was a little girl!

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 12:27:03 PM Oh yes, remember those very well! So glad panty hose were invented! Always felt uncomfortable wearing a garter belt to hold up those nylons!!!!!

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 10:01:45 AM Brenda I definitely think that with a different group of ladies it would be a big mystery...but with "farm girls" and all the ladies who love vintage stuff...not all that challenging. I remember seeing my grandmother put those on her dresser in the evening and I remember her and my Mother always wearing these aweful nylon full slips! They never went out of the yard with pants on ...always a dress. I almost never wear slips (well half slips once in awhile for special occassions) cuz I only wear dresses in the summer and it's too hot to add another layer. In the winter here in Vt it's too cold to wear dresses except to those rare social occasions

Posted - Jul 06 2007 : 09:26:05 AM hmmm, obviously not as much as a mystery as I thought it would be! I know my daughters have probably never seen a garter belt or a girdle. When I was in high school, pantyhose were invented! Such a HUGE change!
Now I rarely even wear pantyhose. My have times changed (I sound like an old fogey...)
